Delaware State Police Investigate Serious Pedestrian Crash in Laurel

Laurel, DE – The Delaware State Police is currently investigating a serious pedestrian crash which occurred this evening north of Laurel.

Preliminary investigation has determined, on March 23, 2015 at 8:34 p.m., a 2011 Lincoln MKZ driven by Ebony Davis 29, of Seaford, pulled over onto the northbound shoulder of Seaford road (US Alt 13). The passenger Sandra Thompson 59, of Laurel, had just exited the vehicle that was parked on the northbound shoulder and for undetermined reasons began heading across both lanes of the roadway. At this time a 2007 Mitsubishi Galant being operated by Rykesh Smith, 24 of Seaford, was traveling southbound on Seaford road, struck Thompson who was standing in the center of the southbound lane. Smith’s vehicle struck Thompson with the front center of his vehicle and caused her to then strike his windshield throwing her back into the northbound lane of Seaford Road. Smith’s vehicle was able to come to a controlled stop on the northbound side of the road after he attempted to swerve to miss striking Thompson.

Sandra Thompson was initially transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her serious injuries and then later flown to Christiana Hospital.

Rykesh Smith, who was properly restrained, was not injured in the crash.

The Delaware State Police is continuing their investigation into this incident. Alcohol, and a combination of dark clothing, in a dark unlit area and not crossing in a designated crosswalk, may have been contributing factors on behalf of the pedestrian. Southbound Alt 13 Seaford Road in the area of the collision was closed for approximately two and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared
