EXCLUSIVE: SBYNews Updated Factory Closing List

This is our latest Local Area Factory Closing List. The list has been updated to reflect the recent 'rash' of business closures.

On the last page - you will see a Maryland/Local income tax worksheet that reflects the economic impact on lost State & County income tax revenues. This is by far - a very conservative estimate - as many of the businesses that are listed the actual number of displaced workers are 'unknown'. But one can easily tell by the information - that severe damage has been done to our economy. This information is also reflected by US Bureau of Labor Statistics data that SBYnews has been publishing monthly.

As far as we are aware - there is no Federal, State, or Local Agency that have been tracking the actual number of business closures.

By the looks at the Center of Salisbury Mall, it's no wonder. I went in there a few days ago and all I saw was plywood and camouflaged paper trying to cover up the vacancies.

Seems as though for every new store front that opens, three fold.

See if The daily swine would post things like this they would still be in business.

Doesn't account for the Perdue tech and accounting layoffs a few years ago - which had a significant impact on the local economy...or the upcoming Perdue HQ relocation to DE.

Holy Cow!!! I recognize most of these businesses. Or I should say used to recognize them. Where is everyone working? I mean there are some really big hitters on this list.

Jiminy Crickets, no wonder there are so many beggars walking around Salisbury. Makes me thankful to be flipping hamburgers, seriously.

IMHO the NY stock analyst must be tuned in to Salisbury News because the stock market has now done a 360 and is going down fast. It happened almost as soon as Joe put up this post.

Democrats are stupid if they think the middle class is doing well.

How about Filtronic Comteck

This is why I come here every day.

Great job Ireton.

Yes. Dire situation but some of these go back decades or more. This does not show any data for businesses opening during those years. Yes, it will still be a net loss but is it fair to only show the closings?

How about the downsizing at syco? Thank a democrat.

Big fight at Bennett.

To 5:15 Poster - Being Fair

I suggest you start tabulating the newcomers. I think you'll find that most of the newer businesses are service oriented type jobs - (Hardees, McDonalds, Oil Spot, etc.). All of the really good manufacturing jobs have become things of the past. Just scan the list and see for yourself.

Wow! I to remember many of these businesses. We are in some really deep trouble. It really opens ones eyes when you can actually see what has happened. Where did you get this list?

I made some pretty decent money a few years back when I worked at Crown, Cork & Seal. Back then (about 96) I was making $15/hr and now I am making $12. So what does that tell you about the local job market. I would say our area has gone ass backwards, I am not joking.

This is just insane. I can remember many of these businesses also. What in the hell is happening around here. Doesn't anyone realize that there are 106 businesses that have literally vanished. Where did they go?

Responding to 4:30 - This is why I come here to. It's the only place that tells the truth.

Got to love that mayor.

Come on now, we have a new Dunkin Donuts out in front at Sam's. And I heard that Moe's is coming to. So we do have a little bit of growth. The problem I see is that these new businesses won't begin to put a dent in my bills. Not at $8 & $9 per hour.

Pretty bleak outlook when you consider the big picture. Hardly anything left.

Is Salisbury/Wicomico county dying a slow death? No new business of substance, high crime, low school rating in Maryland, high unemployment,
larger number of citizens on some
Government support where are we going?

The reason there are no Fed or State agencies tracking is because it makes the political officials look bad. Similar to Sargent Birdaugh deserting the military and then the administration initiating a cover-up for the pending Court Marshall.

True true true

It is becoming a service based economy and when the skilled people leave to find real jobs all you are left with is the detritus.

The only reason the jobs numbers seem to be improving is because all the federal unemployment has now come to an end. My 99 weeks is exhausted and I am now trying to get back into the swing of things.

You can probably get answers quickly on unknown employees by Goggling Found these various Baltimore Sun articles in just a few minutes

.Wayne Division of Dresser will shut down plant in Salisbury and move to Texas, ,,,the end of April 2001..... lay off 301 employees (256 union and 45 nonunion)

1989, Campbell closes its frozen food plant in Pocomoke City. Few of the 272 workers there took jobs at the Salisbury plant ....Also in 1989 246 jobs were lost when Campbell shut its Mrs. Paul's Kitchens plant in Crisfield .....and (also 1989), Carvel Hall, a cutlery manufacturer in Crisfield, was shut down with the loss of 68 jobs

SALISBURY - Campbell Soup plant in Salisbury to close.... 804 workers added to Wicomico jobless....closing by mid Aug 1993....

This sounds familiar even though spoken in 1993. Only thing that has changed in 22 years are the names. Mayor speaking concerning Campbell Soup closing.... “Salisbury Mayor W. Paul Martin said the announcement came as "a surprise and a shock," ......he had been able to do nothing to talk Campbell officials into staying. "I'm not saying they don't care about the workers, but their biggest concern is to their stockholders,"
State Sen. J. Lowell Stoltzfus said some of the blame for the closing must fall on what he described as an "anti-business" attitude in the state. "Maryland has got to look at why jobs are continuing to leave the state,"

8:56PM your 99 weeks of unemployment has come to an end and NOW you're trying to get "into the swing of things"? Sounds like you're just now realizing you have to go look for a job? It doesn't matter if unemployment runs for 10 weeks or for 100 weeks, ppl are just going to wait until they the end of it before they try to find something else.

There are a few missing that were big employers. Manhattan Shirt factory, Salisbury Manufacturing and that place in Industrial Park that VMI bought out. They used to pay big bucks at the time. They were directly across the street from Standard Register on Marvel Rd. Wish I could remember the name.

Maryland is a BIG part of the problem - but never lose sight of the fact that capitalism means many businesses won't survive, but in their place more competitive businesses will thrive.

so do something about it Have a vision and start a business. Or just sit and bitch, your choice

We have one fabric shop open in Salisbury and they look like they are selling off to close as well. Would not surprise me. Every time I go in there to shop there is less and less product.

Today I saw on the news that Energizer is expanding in Delaware.... Looks like they may have a better business climate than we here in "Taxyland".

This is just mind boggling!!!! Upon scanning the list I see well renown names like Dresser, Grumman, Chesapeake Plywood, Second National, Standard Register - on and on. This is just simply unbelievable.

It's a great place to live if you are a School Teacher or work for the Board Of Education!

To 12:04 Poster - You have got that right. That segment of the population has it made in the shade.

After spending many months trying to get hired, finally, I gave up and started doing handy man work. Although I am paying the bills, I am not really getting ahead. Simply put, there are not very many jobs out there to be gotten. Most of our industrial base has evaporated.

At least they aren't relocating to Texas..

Wow! What else is there to say. The list really puts a magnifying glass as to what is really going on in our County economy.
