But a new study finds their vehicles actually make the air dirtier, worsening global warming.
The controversial study raises major questions over the future of 'green' cars.
Driving vehicles that use electricity from renewable energy instead of gasoline could reduce the resulting deaths due to air pollution by 70 percent, it concluded.
Ethanol isn't so green, either, the researchers claimed.
'It's kind of hard to beat gasoline' for public and environmental health, said study co-author Julian Marshall, an engineering professor at the University of Minnesota.
'A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean ... are not better than gasoline.'
The key is where the source of the electricity all-electric cars.
If it comes from coal, the electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to the study that is published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Overunity is a fact, it's been implemented and is working even as I write, yet the elite of business and gov't absolutely will not allow it into the mainstream. Nor even acknowledge it's very existence. For they know full well, if the common man were to gain knowledge of this one single power generating mechanism/technique, if a company began manufacturing and selling overunity generators their lofty perches would shatter. The petroleum based aristocracy would be dealt a death blow. Their positions of power and status would be destroyed by the clean, plentiful and virtually FREE electricity.
The demented mentality of this group of 'world leaders' in gov't and banking and business would destroy the only Earth we have for a GD dollar bill.
Yet another orphaned electricity generating technology is being neglected for the same exact reasons.
Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR) or Chemically Assisted Nuclear Reactions (CANR), are even more clean energy (heat) generating methods. With research and upscaled implementation either of these 'cold fusion' models could power our entire planet., W/O pollution!
