I'm a farmer and knew when they opened that store that was going to happen its a mess in the summer. they need a fly over to cross over then merge back on rt 50 but i'm sure there isn't enough money bla bla.
This is one of the safest intersections not requiring a light I have ever seen. In fact, the rarity of an intersection with this many safety features may be one of its downfalls, since I've seen it nowhere else.
May I suggest a sign that is a "Map" of the intersection to inform motorists as to its function?
Anonymous Anonymous said... Almost an everyday thing. People do NOT know how to use that turn/merge lane. How many people will have to die before they put a light there?

It is far from an everyday occurrence and no light is needed there.
What you said that is correct is that people do NOT know how to use the intersection, and until they learn to drive there will be more collisions like this.
Impatient, unskilled drivers are the major cause of these collisions and most others. Throw in road rage and the 'I'm better than you' attitudes and viola. The idiot herd is thinned once again.
The state cannot, nor should they be required to protect people from their own stupidity and vanity.
Trouble is, the stupid ones often kill others who were doing no wrong.
OK... we can all agree on the fact that people don't know what they are doing at that intersection. The other thing to note is that intersection is made worse in the summer by the fact that so many out of town people who are not familiar with the intersection.
Meanwhile... those of us who are local and live with this intersection see the potential for greater and greater confusion and more and more collisions. That is the only point that has to be made here.
YES, it would be wonderful if everyone could look at a sign and instantly know what is required. BUT, in the summer months when traffic is bumper to bumper and people are he!! bent to get to the beach first....this isn't going to get it fixed. We shall keep discussing this for years to come and I shall keep counting the numbers of times the guard rail is replaced/repaired and otherwise mangled. Best of luck to you all and may it not be your loved one who meets the next tourist who doesn't have a clue.

The procedures are the same no matter where the intersection is located within this state.
Here's a couple of tips if anyone is interested. I know everyone is a perfect driver so they don't need to learn but here goes anyway.
When turning at a crossover, you make your turn BEFORE the middle of crossover. You DO NOT go to the other side (thinking you and any other driver gong the opposite way can see better).
People with a yield sign are required to WAIT until it is clear for them to proceed. If you have to wait ten minutes, you have to wait ten minutes.
If traffic is that heavy you think you cannot cross safely, go down the road and make a u-turn and come back. ( legal and safe u-turn that is)
They need to stop allowing growth outside of the bypass. All of the businesses on the North end were built after the bypass, that is supposed to save time from driving through Salisbury, was built. Now we need a bypass for the bypass. Same is going to happen with West 50. The intersection is flawed. There is not adequate room for people wishing to go east to get into the accel lane. People west bound wanting to turn onto white lowe, pull into the intersection and block that possibility from happening anyway. J turns would be the best solution for the problem. I don't understand why when the State was changing so many intersections to J turns in this area, they allowed this one to go the way it is? You have twice the traffic as you do at Rockawalkin Rd, and a curve west of the intersection that not only decreases visibility, but makes it hard to judge how fast the traffic is coming towards you and if you have time to try it.
I live on White Lowe Road, and hardly ever use the intersection.
I usually go around using Log Cabin Road to West Road or I head west bound on 50 until I can safely turn around.
It is a really bad intersection. It's very dangerous to cross and poorly designed. Its situated in a very bad location. Where the bypass lets off, Royal Farms is right there. It was poorly planned and poorly designed. Stop sign at at Royalty Way and White Lowe Road is usually ignored and they pull out in front of you If you are going straight and not turning into Royal Farms.
The right of way is hardly ever granted. It should have been a service road with an exit off of the bypass, instead it is a daily nightmare for me to go to and from work each day.

I don't think a light is needed. Its common sense that is needed. I see the most idiotic things in that area.

Hope that helps.
They need flyovers at many of the locations on Route 50. If they did that they could take out several of the lights.

I used it yesterday and had no problem at all.
I don't understand how any westbound traffic turning onto White Lowe has any bearing on the crossover.
Since you and perhaps others have difficultly there, I would suggest you avoid the area and maybe not stop at Royal Farms at all.
