Wicomico Judge Election – the people versus the Pappas

The campaign treasurers for each of the two candidates have now filed financial statements for their receipts and expenses through May 20. The following amounts are from those statements.

M. J. Caldwell has reported receipts of $7,360, including $2,000 of his own funds, and a bank account balance of $1,778.53. His largest single contribution, $500, was made by Dr. John Bartkovich.

By contrast, Spyros Sarbanes has received total contributions of $35,761, which includes a number of large donations, the sum of $12,800 being donated by four persons having the same last name – “Pappas” – with addresses in Philadelphia, the two largest ($4,000 each) being from Clement Pappas and Aleni Pappas.

We understand that the Pappas clan has also contributed to the congressional campaign of John Sarbanes, a liberal colleague of Nancy Pelosi in the House of Representatives. Interestingly, that Sarbanes is outspoken about getting big money from campaign donors out of politics!

Other 4-figure donors to Spyros Sarbanes’ campaign are: Dean Pappas ($2,400), Zoe Pappas ($2,400), Robert Rickards of Laurel, DE ($1,000), A. Gillis Allen, II of Salisbury ($1,000), JRT Rentals of Pocomoke City ($1,000) and Paul Sarbanes of Baltimore ($2,000). The $500 club includes Stella Adamopoulos, Jeffrey Badger, Laura Jenkins, Victor Laws, John Long, Eunice McKinley, Peter Richardson, Jeffrey Turner, Frances Urban and Peter Wimbrow III. The smaller donations include one by “Pagano, Ronald”.

Sarbanes’ campaign had a bank balance of $22,136.28 0n May 20 – over 12 times that of M. J. Caldwell.

Based bucks in the bank, we can expect the Sarbanes campaign to send multiple mailings and use media ads to a much greater extent than Caldwell. The Sarbanes campaign has already paid more than $1,000 for "consulting fees – media". Folks at the Daily Times must be smiling.

Just goes to show you there are reasonable people on both sides here. Interesting to see lawyers donating to Sarbanes. I think they are in a good position to judge whether or not he is qualified, which has been a big issue on this blog. And if you think $4000 is a "big money" donation, you haven't been around politics very much at all.

How many criminal trials has the appointee done?

How many child custody cases has the appointee been at a trial table for?

How many jury trials has the appointee been lead counsel on?

(answer hint- zero)

Those numbers mean much more to the citizens of Wicomico County...... Do not let out of state money buy this election.

FYI-$4000 IS a "big money" donation" especially for a candidate who is elected solely by a single county's voters. It would benefit you greatly to research on the MD Campaign Finance Database before posting what is inaccurate false information.

2:05 and all --

"Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes" is a Latin phrase from Aeneid (II, 49), written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC. It has been paraphrased in English as the proverb "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts". The literal meaning is "I fear the Danaans [Greeks], even those bearing gifts" or "even when they bear gifts".

True then and now???

Mr./Ms. 2:07,

In a county judge contest, $12,800 donated by 4 persons from elsewhere, even if close relatives, is a huge amount. And it's scary, too.

When you look at the list of donors to Sarbanes - it isn't a bunch of rabid liberals. It is people from both sides of the aisle - many professional, thoughtful people. Sarbanes may not have the amount of experience that some would like, but the word on Caldwell is that he doesn't have the right temperament to be a judge. Apparently some of his fellow lawyers think he doesn't too. I have had more people tell me that Caldwell is an arrogant jerk, than that Sarbanes doesn't have enough experience. I hope this gets posted as this blog seems pro Caldwell.

It would be a sad day in this great County if votes were swayed for this very important, perhaps critical, position because of out of state money.

And it is, sadly, interesting where that money is coming from. Let the decision be on qualifications, not expenditures.

Anonymous said...

To 3:16, since $4,000 is the maximum individual contribution allowed by Maryland law, it seems that this is, indeed, Big Money. In fact, it's the most that anyone can contribute. So don't try to say that people in other areas get more. This is a huge amount of money by out-of-state individuals trying to influence our local judge's election.

Anonymous said...

Bought and paid for with outta state money....Maryland is a joke!

I thought lawyers could not donate to a judge's campaign -- will they be able to appear before him if he is elected?

3:18, you are what's wrong with politics today. We can agree to disagree on a candidate without having such a drastic reaction. Find something serious to worry about.

The "Pappas clan" is a very wealthy family -- money from a large wholesale grocery business, Clement Pappas & Co. with headquarters in the Philly area. It produces mostly fruit juices and cranberry products.

That firm has donated many thousands to the campaign of John Sarbanes, who is an acolyte of Nancy Pelosi and Obama.

Dean Pappas, who is the son of the founder, married Zoe Sarbanes, who grew up her (Paul and Anthony's sister) and left as soon as possible. Eleni (misspelled in the post and finance report, I believe), is their daughter.

Some observations:

Absent his last name judgejimmy would not have merited (that word again) appointment. A law license from a low tier school and his name are what he brings to the bench.

Contributions to him, basically nominal in size, from some lawyers are accurately characterized as 'business insurance' since he is a sitting judge. This is a small circuit and the same lawyers appear frequently before the same few judges. Get on the wrong side of the judge and both your pocket and your client will suffer. Fact!

The current judges are much better in that regard than many who preceded them. judgejimmy is a major step backwards; a real slap in the face to Wicomico citizens from OweMalley the erstwhile banjo busker.

I'd rather have a cranky judge who knows and has practiced the law to some well connected novice with a documented checkered personal background.

Don't know either man; but the facts regarding the better candidate are crystal clear!

Rep. Dyson Says Smear Drove an Aide to Suicide Part I

By B. DRUMMOND AYRES Jr., Special to the New York Times
Published: May 5, 1988

Representative Roy P. Dyson of Maryland said today that his top aide, Thomas M. Pappas, jumped to his death Sunday from a New York hotel because he felt reports that he had mismanaged Mr. Dyson's office and staff were a ''smear'' that could not be overcome.

Mr. Dyson, a four-term Democrat, added at a news conference here that his preliminary investigation of the reports indicated that most had been ''out of context.''

''I wish we had had a chance to tell both sides,'' he said.

According to the reports, which first appeared in The Washington Post last Sunday, Mr. Pappas made unusual demands on men working in Mr. Dyson's office, ordering one not to date for a year, repeatedly demanding that another accompany him to social events, and telling still another that he would have to perform a stiptease at an office retreat.

Rep. Dyson Says Smear Drove an Aide to Suicide Part II

Mr. Dyson said that shortly before Mr. Pappas plunged to his death, in what the police said was an apparent suicide, he had denied any mishandling of the Dyson staff. The Congressman related that he had spoken briefly with Mr. Pappas, his chief of staff, and that Mr. Pappas had said of The Post article, ''It's not true.''

Benjamin C. Bradlee, executive editor of The Washington Post, said tonight, ''You know we tried desperately to get a hold of both of them'' for comment before the article was printed. He added that Mr. Dyson had also said today that the writer and The Post had been fair. Dyson Sees Commitment

Mr. Dyson said that in his own view, any allegations against Mr. Pappas should be put in the context that he was a man who wanted people under him to be as singleminded and totally committed to their jobs as he was. He added that in the eight years Mr. Pappas had served as his chief of staff, he had come to know him ''like a brother'' and that never in that period had he received any reports of staff abuse or mishandling.

''Anybody who says they told me is lying,'' Mr. Dyson said.

The Post article was based mainly on interviews with former Dyson staff members, some of whom said they had been dismissed because they would not acquiese to Mr. Pappas's orders and demands. Subsequently, the former staffers repeated their allegations in articles that appeared in other newspapers.

At the time of Mr. Pappas's death, he, Mr. Dyson and another aide were in New York for the weekend to see a show and to meet with some military contractors who do business in Maryland's First Congressional District, which Mr. Dyson represents and which includes the state's Eastern Shore and part of its Western Shore. The three men were staying at the Helmsley Palace Hotel.

Rep. Dyson Says Smear Drove an Aide to Suicide Part III

The Congressman said that in the conversation he had with Mr. Pappas shortly before he died, he gave no indication of being so distraught that he might take his own life. ''He seemed to me to be holding up very well, was optimistic about how to handle things, like in a campaign,'' Mr. Dyson added. ''He was was talking on the phone to a lot of people, including his fiancee.''

Why then, once alone, did Mr. Pappas commit suicide? the Congressman was asked. 'He Was Losing All That'

Anonymous said...

Rep. Dyson Says Smear Drove an Aide to Suicide Part IV

''No, he was not,'' the Congressman replied. Are you? he was asked. ''No,'' he replied.

In an earlier telephone interview, Val Ellicott, a former press secretary to Mr. Dyson, said, ''I never saw any evidence that Tony was homosexual.''

But Mr. Ellicott, now a newspaper editor in West Palm Beach, Fla., supported other staff members' assertions that Mr. Pappas had made unusual demands on employees. ''You had to spend your free hours with Tony,'' he said. ''You had to go out drinking with him. He had control over your free time. He was capricious, requiring staffers to do things just to show his power. He would insist that I show up at a bar; he refused to allow me to play in a softball game. He had been denying staffers permission to do things on weekends.''

The softball game involved reporters from The Easton (Md.) Star-Democrat, Mr. Ellicott said. ''Tony said I shouldn't be hanging around with reporters,'' Mr. Ellicott related. ''I said it was part of my job. He threatened to fire me, but I went down there although the game was rained out. The Congressman overruled his attempt to fire me.''

Mr. Ellicott said that the overruled dismissal was the exception to the way in which the Congressional office was run. ''He had almost as much power over Dyson as he had over the rest of the staff,'' Mr. Ellicott said of Mr. Pappas.

At his news conference, Mr. Dyson was asked how he viewed his re-election chances this year in the aftermath of Mr. Pappas's death. Mr. Dyson replied that he had a feeling that the campaign would go very well.

''I'm ready to go - we're hot,'' he added, his voice lifting for the first time in the hour-long session with reporters.

Ultimately we, the citizens of Wicomico County, will vote in that which we deserve. Do we deserve experience or inexperience? Do we deserve someone that has been in hundreds of jury trials, or someone that has never been lead counsel in a jury trial? Do we deserve someone that has had to grapple with the tough questions involved in a a divorce and child custody case, or someone that has heard a Circuit Court deals in those?

It's up to the voters of Wicomico County to either affirm we want a political appointee to oversee such important matters, or to exercise intelligence and say "I don't care who the Governor appointed, I can see with my own two eyes".

The choice here will have an incredible impact on our county for the next 15 years. Just because the Governor put him there does not make him the best choice, and never means we have to just take it because the Governor said so.

It's up to us. Not to outsiders.
