Former UMES Employee To Pay $3,800 Over Theft

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A former University of Maryland Eastern Shore employee who used state purchasing cards to buy an Xbox, cell phones, jewelry and other items for herself has been ordered to pay $3,800 to reimburse the state.

Maryland's Office of the Attorney General said Thursday that 41-year-old April Marie Sivak of Pittsville pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft. She was given a sentence of a year and a half in prison, but a judge suspended the sentence, put Sivak on three years of supervised probation and ordered her to pay the $3,800 cost of the purchases.

Sivak formerly worked as an administrative assistant in UMES's School of Pharmacy and Health Professions in 2012 and 2013. Her attorney did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

How many of the Wicomico county employees (including those in the Bored of Ed) will have to pay restitution for their excessive expenses charged to those credit cards??

There were a lot of eyeball opening things on those lists published here recently ....

Typical UMES student.

What on earth was the judge thinking? 10 years DOC would have been the right sentence!

5:29 no county employees, but those in the executives office may? Please keep in mind the average county employee doesn't have a purchasing card, only executives office, department heads and a few select employees. Most county employees think this is thef and we are embarrassed by their actions.

Why are judges even bothering with this BS suspended sentencing.... No wonder nobody takes punishment seriously. Give her 30 days and quit wasting everyone's time.

Will DR Bell let Mr Lunnermans scam gone on unpunished?

People who handle public funds should be held to the highest standard.
The punishment does not fit the crime. Jail time should be mandatory as well as restitution.
$3,800 was what was identified, I imagine the actual stolen funds was probably much greater.
