MAY 31, 2014 IS WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

(Salisbury, MD) - World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31 and is meant to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe. The day is further intended to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to 6.0 million deaths worldwide annually. The member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. “The ultimate goal of World No Tobacco Day is to contribute to protecting present and future generations not only from the devastating health consequences due to tobacco, but also from the social, environmental and economic scourges of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke,” says Dr. James Cockey, Physician Deputy Health Officer for Wicomico County.

Are you or someone you know ready to quit smoking for good? Do you live or work in Wicomico County? TheWicomico County Health Department has smoking cessation classes every Thursday at noon at the Wicomico Co. Health Department located at 108 E. Main Street in Salisbury. No thanks. And, why would they promote "Chantix", which is linked to physical and mental breakdowns, depression, and suicide? Keep pumping up big pharma.

Watched my mother die of Lung Cancer. Haven't touched a cigarette since she was diagnosed. 11 years without them. Quit cold turkey. You don't want to watch anyone you love die of lung cancer. It's scary not being able to get the oxygen into your lungs that you need.

Promote what you want but smoking is NOT good for you. I smoked for many years and quit in 1993. I had a stress test done recently that showed I had had 80-90% blockage in 2 veins which could result in my departure of this world in as early as 2 months. Smoking creates blockages via plaque in your veins that never goes away regardless of when you quit. Open heart surgery can correct some of the damage using vein replacement in some people. Your mileage may vary. It is shameful that your government continues NOT to discouraging smoking since it generates so much tax revenue for them. Use your own good sense and quit.
