Feds charge New York prison official with denying help to dying inmate

An officer at a New York City prison has been arrested after a federal complaint was unsealed in which it’s alleged that he refused medical treatment for several hours to a dying inmate being held at the facility’s Mental Health Assessment Unit.

Terrence Pendergrass — a 49-year-old Rikers Island Department of Correction officer — was accused Monday afternoon of “deliberately ignoring the urgent medical needs” of an inmate at the facility, according to a statement released this week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and charged with one count of deprivation of rights under the color of law. He was released from police custody after posting $250,000 bond and faces a 10-year maximum prison sentence if found guilty.

This has happened many times at Wicomico Detention Center. A normal occurrence. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to sue the Warden, Officers and the leadership of Wicomico county because they do this.

That happened to me in WCCF! I was sick and twice put in to see the nurse and was never called to medical. It wasn't till after 6 days of not being able to get out of the bunk to eat that two other inmates came in and carried to the door demanding that I needed to see medical! The guards did not even care that I had not shown up for 18+ meals. I then spent 3 days in the infirmary. They only care after you are dead!
