Elegy For The Incandescent Bulb

Farewell, old friend. I am going to miss you.

I speak of the incandescent bulb – the light of my life for all of my years. As of Jan. 1, you have been shut off. That was the mission of a 2007 law that raised energy-efficiency and wattage standards far beyond what you are capable of reaching.

You had a fine run, my friend. Perfected by Thomas Edison some 135 years ago, you stand as one of the greatest inventions of all time.

Your brilliance was in your simplicity. By sending an electrical current through a thin filament, which is sealed in a gas inside a bulb, you produce light.

EULOGY... Unforgivable for such a misspelling by a supposed professional writer. But then, that's the standard for college graduates these days.. Probably graduated with honors (in sex ed).

7:12 Incompetence is the new standard for our society.

Math is the problem. Create a solution, outlaw it in favor some something else, charge 4 times for it, and finally enact the law. Now you can purchase a bulb for 4 times the price of what it replaced and maybe the same light output. Progress sure does move slow.

The incandescent light bulb hasn't disappeared. A firm has taken advantage of a loophole allowing industrial grade incandescent bulbs and produces their brand of Newcandescent bulbs. Not available locally by retail, one hardware store sells them online - http://emory510.com.

The average lifespan of a Newcandescent 60-Watt bulb is 7yrs. /10,000 hrs. Sold as a 2 pack for $5.76. They are 130 Volt AC bulbs which is fine. We used them on the Outer Banks for longevity with the constant current fluctuations.

2/$5.76? I'm calling rape! Used to get 130v bulbs in a 6 pack for that money!

Our government overlords know what's best... they wouldn't force us to use a lightbulb that, if broken, requires a hazmat team to clean it up!

there is a story on the drudge report about OTTAWA'S WILD BIRD CARE CENTRE running low on 100 watt bulbs that are needed to keep sick and injured birds warm. this shows that it isn't just this country that is ruled by shortsighted self-centered idiot politicians, they are everywhere!

Plus the Government required us to purchase energy efficient toilets that use less water. Now it takes two flushes to get rid of a good #2 and on top of that, charges us a yearly septic fee.
All of these laws were enacted with the intent of saving energy. Now, Norm Conway and his liberal following Democrats are proposing to increase highway speeds from 55mph to 65mph. That move will allow you to burn 6% more fuel because people will drive around 72mph. Oh, I forgot, O'Malley and the Democrats increased our gas taxes by by 4 cents a gallon, so the more gas we use, the more revenue for the state. So when it comes to tax revenue vrs auto emissions, tax revenue wins every time.
