Trophy Hunters Kill A Sacred Albino Moose

A rare albino moose, considered a sacred "spirit animal" by Nova Scotia's indigenous Mi'kmaq people, was killed last week by visiting hunters unaware of its spiritual significance. After the hunters posted photos of the kill on Facebook, outrage quickly spread both online and within the local Mi'kmaq community.

The CBC reports that the aboriginal communities have known about the moose for years, but do not kill it because it is considered sacred:

"We know the significance and we've been teaching that to the non-native population for almost 500 years — about the importance that this and other white animals played in our lives," he said. "We are not to harm them in any way, shape, or form because they could be one of our ancestors coming to remind us of something significant that's going to happen within our communities."

Was it stated that it's illegal to kill the moose? Or is it just some lore from aboriginal tribes?

If it's not posted, then good kill... would have done the same thing.

The Aboriginal reservations are in a crisis situation. One would have to see to believe the conditions in which they live. They seem to be Canada's deep dark secret, because Cananda has among the best living standards on Earth. The youth suicide rate is off the chart. With the drugs, alcohol and you name it,the death of a white moose is the least of their worries.

Years ago, there was a white deer that hung out around Airport Road in Salisbury. The locals knew not to shoot it and it was something to see. A rarity. Some hunters from Bmore shot it...Morons

9:04-I agree.I have never heard of an actual law banning the killing of an albino ANYTHING.9:35-I had heard about that deer, but I never was fortunate enough to see it.

9:48 That's because someone shot it

I would not take the animal just because it's albino, and rare. If there were two equal size deer/elk/moose there, and one's albino, and the other normal... I'd take the normal. Antlers and trophy rights mean nothing to me.

IF the albino was the only animal I had seen all day... in the freezer it shall go.
