Mathias Seeking Third State Senate Term

OCEAN CITY — As expected, incumbent State Senator Jim Mathias (D-38) filed for re-election this week, setting the stage for what promises to be a spirited campaign against Republican challenger and current Delegate Mike McDermott for the seat.

Mathias, the popular incumbent state senator, whose District 38 includes Ocean City, Worcester County and much of the Lower Shore, officially filed for re-election on Wednesday. He said shortly thereafter he is ready, willing and able to continue to represent the Lower Shore in Annapolis.

“When I wake up every morning, my number one priority is doing everything I can to help the people I was elected to serve,” he said. “By working together, we have been able to make sure that the voices and the needs of the citizens of the Lower Shore have been heard in Annapolis.”

Mike Mcdermott is real. Mathias is a liberal politician. He needs to go. Thank god we have Mike who is qualified and experienced.

Jim is a nice man and I think he has tried to help. However he is a Democrat and the way O'Malley and his followers have screwed the people of Maryland I will never vote for another Democrat as long as I live.

I am support Jim all the way. McDermott may be okay but he has been in office for 4 years and I'm not seeing where he has accomplished much.

This will be the first time this poultry/crop farmer will vote for a democrat.
Mathias seems to be one of those few politicians who actually cares about the folks he represents. Charles Otto is another, we are fortunate to have these two good gentlemen.

No one doubts Mathias and all he has done for Ocean City while he was Mayor there. Mathias, in my opinion, is much more powerful on the local scene (OC) rather than the state scene (Annapolis). He had more "pull" with the state pol's in Annapolis as Mayor than he does as a State Senator.

McDermott is a voice that is not afraid to speak against the establishment and to put as many thorns in the side of dem's as he can.

My vote will be for Mcdermott for Senator.

"Senator Mathias worked tirelessly to allow veterans to display their military status on their driver’s licenses, making it easier for them to get the benefits they have earned."

Really? Seriously? Who goes around proudly displaying their drivers licenses. This is nothing but BS fluff talk making it look like he really did something.

Del McDermott and the rest of the conservatives have a hard road to hoe 11:05, simply because they are outnumbered by liberals. It's not that he hasn't tried and he is quite vocal about his positions. He comes out immediately swinging on issues. I've noticed others hide and don't state a position right away. This leads me to believe they are waiting and if the dems have the votes to pass certain favorite legislations (gun law for instance) then the dems in the more conservative districts vote with the republicans.
I'm not fooled. I can see right through them and how they operate. The problem is most people aren't as sharp as I am and believe the dems who do drift and vote republican, think they are doing it with sincerity.

Compare to who?

Remember that both Conway and Mathias claimed they knew nothing about the "hidden" 10% grab in Worcester Counties portion of the Slots revenue that gets sent to Baltimore CIty. I guess that can be considered an accomplishment ... for Baltimore City.

Mathias is a good talker but never follows through on what ever the Gov needs. 30 yrs in politics to get it done, he needs to move on. Term limits for everyone please,

We have learned in the past 5 years that the Democrats will LIE thru there teeth to get your vote. If you want a person who is going to stand with the people for the people, then your vote will be counted for Mike McDermott. The Folks in Ocean City really saw what Jim Mathias is all about. He said send me to Baltimore and i will be your voice. once in Baltimore he $hit on the eastern shore just like the rest of the Democrats did!!!!!!!!

Jim Mathias is the epitome of the Three mouthed Democrat. Mouth One,tell`em what they want to hear. Mouth Two, Come to ALL the free dinners I can and congradulate local people who have REALLY made a contribution in the District to benefit all the prople while concealing the fact I have accomplished next to NOTHING. Mouth Three, tell the electorate how good a job myself,Mike Busch, Mike Miller, and OweMalley are doing at making informed decisions on spending the tax money,i.e. State Insurance Website (OweBama Care), Mass Transit funding over Choptank Bridge at Easton, Millions wasted on projects such Harriet Tubman home-place re-vitalization and on and on. I wouldn`t vote for Mathias with a gun between my shoulder blades. Bob Aswell

Amen please don't give him another another wasted term in office, he is clueless.

Joe I saw Carl Anderton ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. He didn't have any signs and I have not seen any press release about it. He just serves the community. This is the kind of leader I want. There is no doubt that Mathias would have channel 16 there if he were to do something like that.

Don't redirect... Answer the question. What has he done. Like it or not, politics is a game and he ain't winning.

You aren't saying something that isn't realized. Whether you like it or not, there are times when you have to play nice to achieve the more important prize.

Only an idiot would vote for a Democrat. Look what they have done to this state and this country. You are a flaming idiot. What has Jim Mathias accomplished? Nothing! He wants to take your guns away, supported same sex marriage, raised the bridge toll, raised the gas tax and voted for numerous other taxes and "fees." Idiot!

I agree with Bob Aswell 100%. You can't say he is one of the low informed.

Anyone who votes for Mathias is a clueless bottom feeder.

Mike has my vote because he is honest and trustworthy. He knows what he is talking about and he doesn't need to BS.

For me, it's all about honesty and Mike has it above all the others.

I will be glad to vote for Mathias. As some comments here indicate McDermott isn't afraid to say what he feels -- that just tells me McDermott is loud and not effective. Mathias has helped me a few times when there was an issue with farming and didn't want any praise for it. Mathias will stay as our Senator.

Are you speaking of what has Del McDermott done? If so let me school you on how law making works. McDermott has sponsored and co-sponsored many bills (septic bill repeal immediately comes to mind)that are killed in committee. It isn't for lack of trying but due to a majority of liberals in the State House in MD. Look up Ava's Law and the Sheddy/Bennett Act both laws (which passed)dealing with criminal issues and both sponsored by Del McDermott. I could go on and on with other bills he's sponsored and co sponcered if you wish. To say he hasn't done much is mind boggling to say the least. Uninformed voter comes to mind.

Mathias is a good guy but all democrats must be voted out, for the economic future of our state and country...among other reasons.

Anonymous said...

Vote for him again you dumbocrat, libtard morons.

Jim Mathias is a democrat in a conservative area. He knows how to play both sides of the fence and has done it well. Even so, this will be the first time he will be up against an honest to god solid republican politician. His wins against Michael James were not exactly landslides and James was just a rich guy who wanted to get into politics. Mike McDermott on the other hand has history in Annapolis and a track record of conservative achievement. He will take the Senate seat next year and he certainly should.

Establishment ruling class elites are all on board for Jimmy M "everybody's friend" - keep going along to get along. Mike McDermott knows the financial crisis we are all suffering - I didn't notice Mike taking donations from SEIU.

Not even close....McDermott all the way. I have never seen a politician so diligently keep their constituents informed as to what is going on during the legislative session. This guy is the real deal and what everyone - no matter their party- always says that they want in a representative. Mathias is a self-absorbed jerk who only has his best interests at heart...meaning what can I do to get re-elected. UGH!

As bad as this State and this country is in only an idiot would be foolish enough to vote for a Democrat. The Democrats are causing the middle class workers to become the poor class of Americans. Don't be foolish, please vote for any Republican on the ticket.

Ignore the 3rd party candidates and vote Republican.

2:56 The downfall of the middle class is a direct result of the calculated policies of the Regan Presidency. Who was the biggest union buster in history? Who lowered taxes for his mega rich friends while throwing the middle class under the bus?
Republicans throw out a smoke and mirrors while taking care of the 1%.

1:55-I always admired the way Del McDermott kept up informed without us having to go through much trouble. He put it all out there. We've not ever seen that in any local elected official. A far as voting democrat, I doubt if I will ever vote for one again. Between Omalley and Obama and the way the lies just flow out of their mouths makes me suspect of any and all democrats.

I think that Mathias is a nice guy, but as others has said - he does not follow through with what he says while he is campaigning after he gets elected. I hear a lot of LOUD hoopla and "Hip-Hip-Hooray!" speeches, but it was just an act.

He has been in O'Malley's "back pocket" for many years now, as well as his O.C. business owner buddies, poultry businessmen, and farmers who line Mathias' pockets with campaign money.

What the Eastern Shore needs is to attract businesses that create professional jobs, not more bars, restaurants, and farmers. Mathias is old-school with old-fashioned ideas that help the good-ole-boys. Perhaps McDermott deserves a chance to make a difference in this sleepy behind-the-times region, but I'm not sure what his agenda is.
