It's his SECOND offense of driving with a suspended license?
SALISBURY — City Council President Jake Day could face jail time after a traffic stop on the morning of his wedding day resulted in charges of driving on a suspended license and other traffic offenses, court records show.
An attorney specializing in Maryland traffic law said the offense carries a penalty of up to one year in jail, but it is unlikely that Day, 31, will get such a stiff penalty if he pleads or is found guilty. Jail sentences of longer than a weekend are rare for such offenses, said Michael Dodd of the Cambridge firm Simmons & Dodd, LLP.
Still, “judges have discretion,” he added.
Day, who has been on his honeymoon in Hawaii, didn’t return text or voicemail messages Tuesday seeking comment.
Day was pulled over at about 8:30 a.m. Friday on Route 10 in Glen Burnie, a city about 15 miles northwest of Annapolis, according to Maryland online court records. A Maryland State Police trooper cited him for driving 73 mph in a 55 mph zone.
But the most serious charges stemmed from the trooper’s finding that Day’s license had been suspended.
It wasn’t his first brush with a traffic cop. His license had been suspended twice briefly and he had been pulled over on suspicion for speeding six times since 2008, The Daily Times reported in March.
First-time offenders usually receive what is called probation before judgment, which doesn’t affect a driver’s points against his license, Dodd said. But those with one or more serious traffic offenses on their record could end up with a weekend in jail or more.
“There’s a wide range of things that could happen, but it’s not to be taken lightly,” Dodd said. Offenses of driving on a suspended license are “basically a notch below an alcohol-related driving offense in most courts.”
Day was elected in a landslide to the City Council in April, and the political newcomer was immediately elevated to council president by his counterparts. He is employed by Salisbury University as the interim managing director of its Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement.
He was married later in the day Friday to his fiancee, Liz, at a ceremony at a church in nearby Pasadena, according to his social media accounts.
You know there is something to be said with the old adage "birds of a feather, flock together". Everyone needs to recall who supported this immature dude for election. They also need to watch those who are "hanging out" with him at his watering holes. Jake is an accident looking for a place to happen. His ego is out of control.
PACE should not be getting involved in this. Their "organization" should not be involved in ANY political issue. They have shown their true colors and this slanted organization isn't trust worthy. An certainly can't be counted on to be fair and unbiased.
Another question that hasn't been asked yet is how will his behavior and these charges affect his desire to become an officer in the army. This guy is out of control. Arrogance comes to mine when reading the article about his trouble. And what about PACE? Is this the kind of person they would want to represent them? I doubt it.

If this was Michael Jordan or Cal Ripken the press would be all over it. What makes Jake Day's position so different on a local level as well as Jim Ireton's.
Ireton is a school teacher who is openly intoxicated publicly.
The future of America being RESPECTED is a joke, especially Democratic leaders from the President on down.
It all started with Clinton and the country has fallen apart ever since.
You are on target Joe. This guy shouldn't be representing anything or anyone until he grows up and that may never happen. But his behavior is a disgrace to those who support him and The City of Salisbury. He needs to get his house in order and then see if he can re-emerge as a leader. Until then, he is laughable.
Having younger people step up to lead is admirable but only when they know how to act. Unfortunately, Jacob Day is riding on his huge victory in Salisbury and he is an embarrassment to those who supported him. Grow up Jacob!
He's already an officer, but that is a good question.
I predict nothing will come of this.
Some of us bear the full weight of the law while others get special treatment.
We all make mistakes, speed occasionally, forget our license or registration. But Day has a pattern. But nothing will happen to him.
The article also points out how disturbing it is that driving with a suspended license is considered no big deal, a step below driving drunk, which seems to be no big deal either.
Until your family member is the one killed by the speeder, the suspended driver or the drunk. Where is the "justice" in "justice system"?

I've been acquaintanced with Jake for a long time and while he is a good guy in many respects he has ALWAYS been someone who feels he is "above the law" and that rules do not apply to him. Hopefully a weekend in the clink will set him straight.

Many folks speed but are attentive about their driving. This guy sounds out of control.
How will Salisbury cops handle his driving now that he can influence their futures?
Gotta wonder about how many times he only got a warning? And if he gets to buzz around in a university car at times?
The more I read, the madder I get with this irresponsible over-grown juvenile.
I want to know what makes him think he is so special that he is above the law while the rest of us average citizens obey the law, follow the rules, and have respect for law enforcement? If we don't follow the speed limits and get a speeding ticket, we, as mature adults take the punichment by admitting to our mistake, pay the fine and strive never to do the same thing again. Most of us can't afford the extra cost to our insurance so we learn our lesson. This overgrown child doesn't learn from his mistakes because someone always fixes them for him so he takes no responsibility and no ownership. Hence, we have serving as council president a spoiled brat who thinks he is above anything bad he does because someone else will take care of it and fix it for him.
What a childish mentality. What poor leadership. What a poor spokesperson for Salisbury. What poor judgement. What poor ethics. What a poor example of a council president.
To the various police departments, and judges that let this slide and don't do anything to him, you are just as guilty as Day is. Jake Day needs to finally learn from his mistakes before he kills innocent children and adults.
His license should be removed from him for at least a year and he should not be allowed to drive any vehicle for any reason for that period of time. He should also spend more than a week-end in jail and made to attend driving classes until the year revoke license period is completed.
His cocky arrogant attitude needs adjustment which is long overdue.
He is a liability to the city and as a taxpayer when he causes personal injury accidents, I don't want my taxes covering his bad behavior. If the mayor were smart he would want to cut the citys' liabiltiy Jake Day has created for everyone one of us.
