OC Views Route 90 Dualization As Higher Priority Than 50 Bridge; State Says City Needs To Address Issue With County First

OCEAN CITY – During an update with the State Highway Administration this week, resort officials asked for consideration in prioritizing the dualization of Route 90 ahead of the reconstruction of the Route 50 Bridge.

Tuesday afternoon marked the bi-annual meeting between the Town of Ocean City and the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) where SHA District Engineer Donnie Drewer and Assistant District Engineer Ken Cimino discussed the Route 90 and Route 50 bridges along with other maintenance and repairs on Coastal Highway.

Drewer began with the Route 90 bridge and the town’s request to dualize the secondary entrance into Ocean City to help alleviate traffic.

Really? And exactly what does these resort officials plan on doing with all these vehicles coming off this dualized Rt. 90? There is a reason it is still a single lane, there is no where for them to go once they hit coastal highway. This is called traffic (calming) control.

They sure do need to make this their top priority every Saturday after 10 am traffic coming into OC is sometimes backed up to the 113 Berlin exit and sometimes goes beyond that exit. Years ago the traffic coming out of OC used to flow but this year for a month traffic coming out of OC was backed up from St.Martins light to Coastal Highway people trying to get on Rt 90 had to stay on Coastal Highway turn lane waiting for the traffic to move . It was so bad one weekend we drove down Coastal Highway until we hit Fenwick then turned left on Lighthouse Road.

Dual lanes going into and coming out of OC will not help. As stated above there is nowhere for the traffic to go. Instead you'll just have two times as much traffic waiting to get on that VERY small island.

They make a left or a right. And the tourists drive straight through into the ocean.
