Unusual Collaboration At UMES, Salisbury Benefits Both Schools

Martin Ngwa, a student at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, plans to go into social work after graduation — though his school doesn't offer the major.

Thanks to an unusual partnership between UMES, an historically black institution, and Salisbury University, its traditionally white neighbor, Ngwa is earning dual degrees in sociology and social work.

The opportunity to take classes on both Eastern Shore campuses is the result of several decades of collaboration — a partnership that was praised this week in a federal court opinion that found some Maryland policies still promote "separate but equal" colleges and universities.

Nice Try on the Propaganda.

Facts -

UMES has 95% students on pell grants (notice the non reporting)

A degree at UMES is a joke, even a masters holds no prestige in the job market.

The reason the other schools mentions have enrollment down 5% is because the costs no longer outweigh a higher salary, if you can get a job.

Money is the real reason for this wonderful SU / UMES merger.

Stop the diversity, fairness games SU and UMES, the curtain is up!

While UMES can accurately carry the mantle of Historically Black College/University I think suggesting SU is a historically white institution is a fictional figment of the article's author.

If we were starting from scratch today there would only be a need for one university locally. It would probably have fewer total students than SU and UMES currently enroll, even if it offered the same degrees they do because there is some duplication of majors between them.

Not an alum of either school so no axe to grind or tradition to protect.

Buy if you were white you would take your life in your hands. Morgan and Coppin are in the worst parts of Baltimore City where a white student would be robbed, beaten, and probably murdered. Bowie not much better being in PG county. And check the graduation percentages of Maryland black colleges, DISMAL. Their idea of education is a bachelor of science in basketball.
