Truck Driver Cited After Bus Crash On Summit Bridge Road

Location: Summit Bridge Road (St. Rt. 896) at Howell School Road, Bear, DE

Date of Occurrence: Thursday, October 10, 2013, at 10:01 p.m.

Vehicles and Drivers:
Driver 1: John Faverio, 56, of Wilmington, DE (properly restrained, not injured)
Vehicle 1: 2002 International bus

Driver 2: Roberto Figueroa-Gomez, 26, of Miami, FL (properly restrained, not injured)
Vehicle 2: 1990 Peterbilt tractor and trailer

Resume:
Bear- Numerous bus passengers were injured in a crash yesterday evening.

The crash occurred at 10:01 p.m. as John Faverio, 56, of Wilmington, drove a 2002 International bus south on Summit Bridge Road. As the bus turned left from Summit Bridge Road onto Howell School Road it was struck by a tractor trailer that was traveling north on Summit Bridge Road. The collision caused the bus to overturn onto its side.

Nine of the bus passengers were transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital. Two were admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. The remainder of the forty bus passengers were transported to area medical centers by private vehicle and treated for minor injuries.

Faverio and the tractor trailer driver, Roberto Figueroa-Gomez, 26, of Miami, FL, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash and not injured. Figueroa-Gomez was issued a traffic summons for failing to stop at a red light.

Why did the truck run the red light? Was driver texting, inattentive, or possibly drunk? The two students admitted to the hospital were seriously injured and there have been NO additional reasons given for the driver's failure to stop at red light.
