Maryland is experiencing a run on guns before some of the toughest firearms laws in the nation take effect next month, testing the limits of state police to process the tens of thousands of additional applications being submitted.
State Police say that through Aug. 31 they had received 85,141 gun-purchase applications this year. For all of last year, police received 70,099 applications and in 2011 they received 46,339 applications.
“We’re looking at unprecedented numbers,” Maryland State Police Sgt. Marc Black said. “We saw this coming.”

if they saw it coming why didn't they hire the appropriate staff to have the background checks done within 7 days?
It seems the democrats are hell bent on driving every law abiding citizen and business owner out of MD. Between the ridiculous gun laws, rising taxes and overbearing regulations are killing business and causing citizens to move to VA and PA.
don't forget Delaware I just purchased land there, I'm out of here Maryland
Move to a third world country they will give you a gun.
They "saw it coming"??? But couldn't staff the offices properly (even to COMPLY WITH THE LAW!). Why not? Because as is plainly (and painfully) obvious, they don't think they have to "comply" -- the law isn't made for them. YOU don't "comply" with the law and you may lose your life. Plus, there ain't no money in them following and obeying the law....so you can continue to wait as long as they feel like making you wait. Seat belt violators and speeders are the priority. Clue for the police --- people aren't buying guns to PROTECT you.
It was a 120 day backlog at the beginning of June. I can only imagine what it is now! Yeah you saw it coming but didn't prepare...typical. And let's not forget where the heck all these applicants are going to complete training?
Anybody buying a restricted firearm in MD right now is in for a surprise come OCT 1st. Should have got it way earlier. Good luck to the have nots.

Only if your buying from a clueless dealer, most are releasing after 8 days. Take your attitude and go pound sand.
