Berlin Fire Company Funding Debate Slated For Sept. 9

BERLIN—Possible plans to reinstate some funding to the Berlin Fire Company are on the agenda for the Monday, Sept. 9 mayor and council meeting and those plans come at a time when residents are caught in what might be described as a whirlwind of allegiances, politics, finance and litigation.

The July 2012 decision by the mayor and council to stop the town’s funding of the fire company was a response to what town officials said was the fire company’s refusal to work with them to resolve complaints of harassment within the ranks of the company’s firefighters and paramedics.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is another installment in the long-running debate between town leadership and the volunteer organization that provides firefighting and emergency medical services to Berlin and nearby areas.

Let the town take them over. With what the town has provided in funding in the past plus the stipend from the county, plus the ambulance billing a fire engine and ambo can be purchased.5 man staffing for both on a 24/48 hour rotation can be implemented.Don't need 2 ambos, how many times does 2nd run ambulance scratch(fail to get out)?

The town should take over the Fire Department. They brag about being a volunteer fire company then let them volunteer to raise their own funding if they want to.

As a resident of Berlin I am astounded by the attitude of the Berlin Fire Department. They don't want to service the town of Berlin because the town does give them any money. They only receive money from the county.Well hello, I pay county taxes. Snow Hill and Newark don't receive any money from their town and they provide service to the residents of the town. Who ever is advising the leadership of the fire department is providing advice that will turn the public against them.

The Town of Berlin is in Worcester County and the fire company receives funding from the county. Therefore the fire company has a fiduciary responsibility to provide services to the citizens and visitors of the Town of Berlin. The Town owes them nothing and shouldn't cave in to their threats.

As a taxpayer in Berlin if the mayor and council seek to re-fund the Berlin Fire Company I will do all in my power to see that these elected officials who supported the fire company are defeated in the next election. I think a petition drive is in order to see how the people of Berlin feel.

I live in Snow Hill and know that the town supports the fire and ambulance with funding, employee payroll, etc. Pocomoke, and Ocean City are incorporated towns and probably provide financial support to their fire and ambulance. Newark, Bishopville, Stockton, Showell, and Girdletree are not incorporated towns. Ocean Pines (which is a homeowners association--that has everything a town would have such as public works. police, etc.) supports Ocean Pines Fire Company fire and ambulance around $500,000 per year to cover their expenses above what the county provides from their on-line budget information. It would appear the Berlin Fire budget request around $600,000 seems to be in line. From checking websites, it appears that Berlin Fire is busier than Ocean Pines fire.

7:40-Stop bringing up the victim of the vehicle accident in your whatever it is your are trying to promote. This particular victim was dead-okay-and died almost instantly upon impact. Stop brining this up to try an further your agenda.
Not only is it rude it's crude and further diminishes whatever it is you are trying to gain. stop it and don't bring it up ever again. the family isn't interested in hearing your childish claims-get your own life and STOP worrying about theirs-they know what happened and are satisfied and anyone who doesn't agree can go to hell!
