BERLIN -- A manhunt ensued this afternoon in Berlin after a routine traffic stop turned dangerous, resulting in a school being placed on lockdown temporarily, an unsuccessful extensive ground and air search and a Berlin police officer being injured during an altercation with the suspect.
Lt. Jeff Lawson of Berlin Police Department told The Dispatch minutes ago that DaMar S. Collins, 26, is being sought after eluding police during a routine traffic near Artisan’s Way this afternoon in Berlin. Collins is about 5’10” tall and weighs about 150 pounds.
Lawson indicated after the traffic stop ensued, Collins fled his vehicle. He was apprehended briefly before assaulting a police officer, who sustained non-life threatening injuries. Collins was able to flee the scene, touching off a massive manhunt throughout the commercial district Berlin, resulting in road closures and police stationed through the downtown corridor.
After fleeing police, Collins reportedly broke a window in a residence on Main Street and entered the residence briefly before exiting. Lawson said authorities are fairly confident he was aided by a family member in his successful escape.
Court records indicate Collins, of Bishopville, is wanted on an active warrant for second-degree assault dating back to April 15. Numerous other charges, from marijuana possession to trespassing, are included in a basic criminal background check.
Maryland State Police troopers and a MSP helicopter participated in the unsuccessful search this afternoon. While the search was conducted today, Buckingham Elementary School was placed on temporary lockdown, which has since been lifted, according to Lawson.
Anyone with information about Collins is asked to call Berlin Police at 410-641-1333.
More on this developing story will be coming in The Dispatch.

Way to go Barney. One of these days it's going to be a dirty bomb they can't find. They ought to shut down all these little police fiefdoms and let the MSP take care of all of it.
Wow, allow me to have an opinion about your opinion. you've commented as anonymous because you know your comment is wrong. I hope you don't live in a municipality and we all know that MSP only does traffic. I hope you don't need help and if you do, remain anonymous.
He's probably laying in someones flower beds, disguised as shubbery.
"Numerous other charges, from marijuana possession to trespassing...." Really? Thats a hard man right there. They chased him so energetically because he beat the crap out of the cop who heroically (and stupidly) chased him and thought that (one against one) HE could handle it. He forgot it takes 5 against one to subdue a man. And apparently, it takes a helicopter, dogs, roadblocks, and dozens upon dozens of cops to let ONE MAN escape. They are going to have to write a LOT of seat belt and speeding tickets to recover the costs of trying to find that wanted trespasser. Good thing there wasn't a warrant out on him for "littering". Who knows how many innocent citizens would have been stopped and searched at gunpoint trying to catch him for that one.......
Wow, 5'10 150 lbs and he beats the cop who tried to arrest him? Ok, Houston we have a problem, gotta call for backup and lots of it. Can't arrest the guy, Holmes, call in the HELICOPTER and put everything on LOCKDOWN. These cops must watch too many Rambo movies. SMH.
A lot of people are assuming it was a knock down dragout fight. It wasn't. The officer was kicked in the head trying to pull Collins off a building which he ended up on top of. Once in the eye, the other to his nose, breaking it. Then Collins got tased and whatever substance he was on kept him from being subdued.
12:43 don't waste your time explaining to these people
Looking at some of these comments makes me hope that the next time they encounter him they go straight to deadly force.
12:43....if I was the cop, THAT'S what I would have said too..LOL!...the criminal was on top of a building and they STILL couldn't get him?! THAT is outrageously funny and sad. And "whatever substance he was on" helped him ignore getting Tased? Probably helped him whip that ace, too, huh? How about "he was beating my ass so bad, I couldn't see where I was actually pointing the taser and missed him"? The guy was on foot. You cops outnumbered him 150-1 WITH roadblocks and air support. And you couldn't catch him? Ever seen any Keystone Cops movies? I'll bet it was just like one of them....
wow I guess the Officer should have looked the other way then and just let him go .. you peple make me sick .. he broke the law and when he got caught he ran and kicked the Officer in the head .. Thats an A class citizen in my book.. so when this creep climbs in your window or kicks you in the face dont call the police .. I dont understand why people stick up for scum... Most of the mass murders had no record ..
THEY GOT HIM JOE.
lmclain, you are all over this site, commenting on everything. I don't care about the circumstances that make you such a lovely person. I don't care to figure out if you're unemployed and have nothing better to do than comment on things in a negative way because that's what the 500lbs of lard you carry allow you to do. none of this matters. a man was hurt during something that could have been avoided if the criminal acted accordingly. How do you have an opinion on something you weren't there for? Because our society allows it. God bless you and be nice to people, you don't know who may have to help you someday.
check out where is from , he can live in any gutter!
If the criminal acted accordingly....lol..now that is funny!!
I'm 5:29. If I was Barney I'd have shot him. I'm all for law ans order, I just get tired of these punks making asses of LEOs. Do we need some different training or something? WTF? This is 2 punks in 2 weeks make Snow Hill AND Berlin look stupid. God help us if some real poop ever goes down, it looks like we will be on our own.
Lucky he was not in Weeeekomeeko County. He looks looks like a thitry or forty pointer to me. Fit nicely next to my ten pointer on the wall.
Next it will come out that he was an 'A' student, Eagle Scout, church going boy who took care of his invalid mother selflessly, right?
12:04...Unemployed? Wrong. 500lbs? Very wrong. Criminals act "accordingly"? I can't come up with an adjective for that one...Refute what I say. Did all those cops, with air support, dogs, and roadblocks, catch a man on foot who was on top of a building at one point? NO. Actually, I think the cop SHOULD have shot the little punk. Cops have shot a whole lot of people for a whole lot less (I know --- these facts are unsettling to some...), but assaulting a police officer? I'm not talking about the "he TOUCHED me" normal cop complaint about "assault". I'm talking about THIS one - a violent act to intentionally cause a police officer serious bodily harm. A bullet, or several of them, would be perfectly justified. Some lines you just don't cross....
Shooting him wouldn't be a good idea - we could have another Trayvon Martin case and visit from Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, pleease No. But it would be great to see K-9 chase this punka@@, I bet that wouldnt last long.
