Second, the police subdued the situation BEFORE cars got flipped and things burned. Don't forget about past parties of this nature.
Third, Smith Street is the most dangerous neighborhood in Salisbury. Period. Check the crime maps that the city publishes. The students should be thankful nobody got shot or robbed.

This is going on all over the county. our neighbor hood has 2 houses owned by a local slumlord, that he bought in foreclosure in what is a really or was a really nice neighborhood. He's put 4 college punks in each one. 4 of them female in one. all of whom are highly praised athletes on their volleyball team, one a scholar. But nonetheless, they have no clue how to fit into a residential neighborhood. They are a danger to the children. They are drunks, keep the neighborhood up. constant cars coming and going, up to 10 at a time at the house.. speeding. Squealing tires.

Sorry students, but when college kids move into the neighborhoods, you cause trouble, a great deal of noise, litter (beer cans, bottles, etc.), parking congestion, and generally destroy the peace and quiet of property owners who pay taxes.
You are attending school to learn and prepare for your careers, not party central. Your parents worked long and hard to make enough money to send you to school and you waste their efforts on your behalf on drunken parties destroying property...very intelligent.
Home owners don't like SU students in their neighborhoods because of their behavior. The college can put a PR spin on it by the "helping clean-up the neighborhoods", "raking leaves" ect. but that doesn't change the facts. It just helps with damage control publicity for the college.
Yes, college kids are away from their parents control and get wild because no one is watching them and they don't answer to mom and dad. That doesn't mean you still shouldn't honor your parents who are footing the bills. Act like responsible semi-adults if you want to be taken seriously.
You, the party kids, give the honest hard working students that have to work, study, and maybe take care of a family a bad name and image. I feel sorry for them. The party-animals we can all live without.
SU needs to be a college that actually teaches rather than a landfill of patrons looking for recognition. In the end, the students haven't really developed well. Their behavior is your verification.
This seems to be a yearly event. The last 2 years have not gone very well. Maybe the college would let them use the stadium to have their party instead of a city street.

I used to live in two college neighborhoods, and I never had a problem with the students. I treated them with respect, and they did the same for me.
I would keep watch over their houses during breaks (actually chased away suspicious people a couple times). They did a great job of complying with reasonable requests that they be good neighbors. And one house kept the mailbox empty and front lawn mowed while I was on vacation.
The summer I moved in, I would find a crack pipe or other bad things on my lawn every few weeks. When the students were in their houses, all that stuff stopped. It's better to have a porch full of drunks as witnesses to scare away the riffraff at night than a crackhead a few feet away from your child's open window.
Worst I ever dealt with was somebody puked on my car. The party hosts noticed it and took it upon themselves to wash the car the next morning. I didn't even realize it until they asked if they could use my hose to clean up their mess.
I'm not saying that every house is responsible, but of the 8 or so that I dealt with around me they all made acceptable neighbors. Kindness and respect go a long way. Welcome them to the neighborhood when they arrive, and keep the dialogue open with them during their stay on your street. Don't be afraid to ask for compliance when they get out of hand. If they are hanging out and offer you a beer, accept the act of kindness and spend some time chatting with them. If their lawn looks like crap and they just moved in, maybe they need a mower. Lend yours, and often they'll mow your lawn as thanks. :)
If their judgement skills fall out of line it's more likely that they are still practicing being on their own and thinking of others than any malicious intent that you may perceive. You probably don't have to call the cops - just walk over and let them know how they are affecting you. Most of these students want to be good neighbors. Help them become the person they are learning to be by giving them a great example to live up to.
9:18--Many of the well connected slumlords were able to get "EXEMPTIONS" from the 4-2 law when it first was implemented. GNI, Insley, Captain Investments, Eric Davis, Bill Martin , Stu Leer etc. etc. etc. all were granted exemptions from the law. You can thank the zoning appeals board. Jake Day was recently on that board wondered why no one ever asked if he had voted to exempt any more properties. Why aren't the landlords partly responsible for the damage cost of these "gatherings" as well??????
As an alumnus 96' and former SU partier, I have gotten my company to recruit at SU. We have hired 15 qualified hard working grads and interviewed about 50 over the past 5 years. Not all are bad, and not all that drink in college turn out to be degenerates.
Salisbury University needs to house ALL of their students on campus. The slum lords get big bucks by renting these houses etc and don't really care about the residents that live in the area! I know Salisbury slum lords don't want to hear this but they do not live in these areas and don't care! Our mayor and council majority are up the slum lords butts so don't expect it to change but it just goes to show all the regular residents of this city are chopped liver. Shameful that our city resources as well as our police have to endure such craziness! Make an ordinance or whatever you have to do that these students are NOT allowed to live off campus!!

I live a road over from the party. The zoo has gotten out of control these past 2 years. A party (10people or so) used to be ok. Now parties are not a party until it hits 50 people. The noise and trash is stupid. I have put up with it for long enough. I am tired of picking up beer cans. I am tired of people peeing on the front lawn. I am tired of the yelling screaming and the music. I really hate to do this, but I am going to start calling the Police for every little party or infraction that I see. Why is it so hard to understand that when a complaint is filed and the police respond, those causing the complaint should comply and do as told ie: break up the problem that is causing the complaint. If you are able to read newspapers or watch news on tv, you should know that there is a huge amount of disrespect for authority, be it teachers, LEOs, parents etc. And if you cannot see this you have your head up your rectum.

My question is why were the police not called before the crown got to 600? In our neighborhood we called when there was 50-100 in a single house. Because you could hear them and the music from inside everyone else's house and of course they would tumble out in the streets, climb on the roofs and it is a miracle that someone wasn't killed in their drunken frenzies, or die over over intoxication. There are major questions still to be asked about why it continued so long!

Alright. The Salisbury University Police's jurisdiction is limited to the campus. They may assist other agencies but, just as a berlin police office cannot sit on a busy street in salisbury and trap people with a radar gun, the Salisbury University Police are also limited to their respective jurisdiction.
I am a student but I don't condone the behavior of the those that were causing the problems (which, i can promise, was not all 700 participants or whatever the number actually is). That being said, I also disagree with the manner in which the police attempted to disperse the crowd. In fact, two of the individuals harmed by the macing weren't even students but rather a father and his young daughter.
So, in keeping with my original point, it's apparent to me that anyone suggesting that Salisbury City "bill SU for all student-related police calls" is, quite simply, close-minded and illogical. This entire problem is being perpetuated by this type of thinking. Instead of holding the individual responsible, we punish the masses. Furthermore, Salisbury University educates people. They do not sit us down, teach us how to perform keg stands, and then turn us loose in the streets to reek havoc.
So, in closing, I apologize on behalf of my fellow students for those that took something fun a bit too far. However, I implore the readers of this blog to entertain more reasonable and logical responses to issues such as these. Students are not Salisbury's only problem, friends. The 700 person block party produced 0 deaths and 0 injuries excluding those inflicted by the police via their mace canons. However, lest we forget that someone was just murdered on Smith Street not too long ago. Haven't heard much about that...Priorities.

Great, there were no deaths or injuries. Because the bottles and cans MISSED their targets - the police officers. Assaulting an officer is a serious offense.

The party ended with 0 deaths and 0 injuries because THE POLICE DID THEIR JOBS and broke it before the drunk morons on the roofs had an opportunity to fall off and break their necks.
You talk about the murder on Smith Street. We remember. We remember the one across from Bennett, too. The police that were targets of the bottles and cans are the same police force who caught those murderers.
Thank you for apologizing for your fellow students. They are the ones who should do the apologizing, not you. And that is the problem. Year after year, the consequences are so minor or so few affected, that the students don't take it seriously. It's just another cool story to tell their friends when they go drinking next time.
You are right these students aren't Salisbury's only problem. But when they become a problem, they take police away from doing the "more important" work. Because this many people out of hand are a danger to themselves and those around them.
If you do not understand that, then that is part of the problem.

The drinking age should be 18. You want this kind of thing to stop? The only way to do that is to lower the drinking age. Allow 18 year olds to grow up and learn to drink at a bar responsibly. Not only would students be given the opportunity to prove themselves worthy. We would weed out the drunks and drunk drivers quickly, students would grow up much faster, and the economy (local bars, restaurants, etc.) surrounding universities would boom. The US system is backwards. Take freedoms away, people become dependent on the system. Give more freedom to individuals, they will learn how to properly manage that freedom.

The neighborhoods that have to put up with the SU college parties that start Wednesday nights and extend through Sunday nights have more than strain.
The noise, the trash, the property damage, peeing on private property, having sex on private property, so drunk they fall out of first floor screened-in windows. The trash collector has to get out of the truck and pick up the empty bottles because the garbage cans are over-flowing it is plain stupid. This college has gotten too big to be located in town. They could use their patron's money and build the college out in the county where they can have all the room they need. This is 1:18. I graduated from SU in the mid 90's (then SSU). I did drink in college and still drink today. I attended college parties maybe not as large as this one but large enough to probably make some people upset. As contributing member of society I paid over 40k in taxes last year, donated to several charities and volunteered my time teaching financial literacy. I also mentored an inner city kid to get into college. I also recruit some of these "SU punks" to work for my company. I am maybe not the best at typing but oh well. I am also a local. I am sure you and all other that are so upset live on Hazel or Smith st or right around where this party was. AGAIN it was unfortunate but these kids are not all bad. And I hope that the somehow SU and the town can come to some common ground.

Does anyone remember the death of Danny Ball? It was tragic and related to the influences of the 20% of SU students who rape and pillage our neighborhood. SU, step.up. This is a disgrace to your good students (and the degrees they earn) and to YOUR NEIGHBORS. We deserve better.
