Median Barrier, Lower Speed Limit Pitched To Heighten OC Pedestrian Safety

OCEAN CITY – Coming off a summer with numerous pedestrian accidents, city officials sat down this week with state authorities to come up with solutions.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Mayor and City Council met with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) for their annual fall meeting.

SHA Assistant District Engineer Ken Cimino said the SHA hired a consulting engineering firm to do a pedestrian safety study on MD 528, or Coastal Highway, between 62ndStreet and Convention Center Dr. The Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) played a vital role in the study providing real time information, according to Cimino.

You can't fix stupid.

I've got an idea to save the idiots. Why don't we just eliminate all traffic on coastal highway and ban all alcohol sales during the Summer months.

Exactly! there are enough buses and cabs in ocean city. No need for privite vehicles driving up and down the road down there.

It does not matter what the speed limit is. People are going to cross where they see fit. Ocean City would have to have an officer at each street 24/7 for them to catch people. Sad to say more will loose their lives by being stupid

I would like to see a special tax in ocean city to help off set the damages from bad driving and speeding.

Triple the tax on alcohol in Ocean City.

They should triple tax alcohol in OC. Maybe it would offset the property taxes that are already too high. If anyone does have any extra money think twice about buying in OC and think more along the lines of Deep Creek. OC nickles and dimes too much anymore. It's impossible to make any money on rentals. There used to be some money to be made in resale but years ago the mayor and council ruined that by rubber stamping every project that came along. Not very forward thinking and now the place has lost every single bit of it's charm except for Trimper Rides and a few other landmarks.

Maybe the OCPD should be ticketing jay walkers more agressively. All they seem to worry about is june bugs smoking pot and drinking.

No 6:16 they would rather set up operations where they walk out in traffic and if a driver doesn't stop they ticket them. That makes a whole lot of sense doesn't it? That law is an antiquated law that been around before everyone and their brother had a vehicle. Of course the drivers may be wrong but also are jay walkers who should be concentrated on more because when a vehicle vs a human the vehicle always causes damage to the human no matter who is at fault.

So many think that because they are a pedestrian they have the right of way. THEY DO NOT. They only have the right of way if they are in a cross walk and are not walking against the crosswalk signal. They should ticket every jay walker they see. Put up signs under the bus stop signs that there is a 200 dollar fine for jaywalking. They will really raise some money for them to spend.

Traffic is already ugly at the height of the season, eliminating lanes, adding lights, and shortening times on Philadelphia are all terrible ideas. Making it so the peds have to cross at intersections is probably the best idea. The article credits alcohol to many of the accidents but not a breakdown of which side is drunk. Drunks on bikes and on foot is a horrible combination.
More enforcment of violations by the peds is a much needed thing. Drunk drivers are already targeted but little attention is given to the other side of the equation.

Pedestrian has the right of way should never be uttered because they tend to think it's everywhere and not just walkways. It gives a false sense of security. For years peds in OC have been given this false sense of security and that's why all the accidents. I've been screamed at by peds several times telling me they had the right a way when they clearly didn't.

I've been saying it for 10 years.

25 MPH from the Delaware line to the inlet May to October.

I guarantee that will prevent loss of life and serious accidents.

25 mph will prevent loss of life or serious accidents? It may lessen the number but it will not prevent them. The only way to prevent accidents is to entirely ban motor vehicles and bicycles. Do you want to go that far?

It's called Darwinism folks. The dumb ones get taken out and improve the gene pool.

YOu kinda contradict yourself don't ya?

They have the right of way like you say, and also they have some responsibilities of their own. Like not stepping out too soon. Any vehicle coming towards the intersection should have enough room to slow or stop when they step off the curb.

I don't think it will ever totally go away. Someone will always think they can do what they want when they want and how they want.

And that is how the gene pool gets thinned out.

10:50 anyone can make a mistake at any given time. I don't think the families of those lost would appreciate comments like that.

C'mon. How many hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people are in Ocean City from May to Oct? No deaths is a fine goal, but if 5-6 people lose their lives in six months from being hit by cars, it is not worth the money and effort to fix a problem that ain't there. Its politicians. They MUST always find NEW things to "fix". Something to debate and wrangle over, when the latest "the sky is falling!!" issue is....created. And thats whats being done here. If we limited these goofs to a 60 day session every eighteen months, think of all the "problems" we wouldn't have to put up with them "fixing", "regulating", and "restricting". That's not even addressing the fees, fines, surcharges, levies, and taxes they are so good at imposing. Probably cut down on all the bribery, too. Might be reach on the "bribery" thing, though. Politicians ALWAYS find a way....
