Md. Gov.: Toll-shirking rental cos. 'scofflaws,' 'deadbeats'

The Maryland governor says a tougher approach is necessary to hold "scofflaw" car rental companies accountable for not paying tolls.

The Maryland Transit Authority should revoke car registrations from rental companies that have outstanding toll fares, says Gov. Martin O'Malley. If these "scofflaw," "deadbeat" companies question the MdTA authority to do so, they should file a lawsuit, he says.

How about a tougher approach to hold useless politicians accountable for bankrupting their states and countries.

The problem isn't with the rental car companies not paying tolls, the problem is the individual renting the car and not paying to toll at the toll booth. To revoke car registrations from rental car companies, the likely out come will be no rental car companies in the State of Maryland. In all instances, the rental car has no idea there renter have not paid tolls until weeks later when notification is sent to the company of an unpaid toll. By then the contract is closed out and the renter is long gone. A solution would be yet another state law that permits rental car companies operating Maryland to apply the toll against the renter's credit card no matter how much later the contract between the rental car company and the renter was closed.

Thank you, 848! Yes, that would be the better idea! Inasmuch a s the total number of rental cars on the highway minus those of us who do the right thing and pay even if in a rental, there is little small change to be scraped up from such a program.. In actuality, O'Malley would probably organize a million dollar a year department to recover two thousand dollars in tolls and call it "Job creation". What a shame on us he is...

how about maryland politicians who pushed board of public works to spend non necessary maryland tax payers dollars for non essential projects

I would never even think of not paying for a toll just because I am in a rental car. I guess only a thief can come up with these ideas. I agree with the above commentor that the rental companies should be able to charge the customer the toll fee PLUS expenses.

O'Malley is the "Scofflaw".

I wonder how much of Maryland's money went to pay for his political trips and business junkets all over the world?

O'Malley is a scofflaw. Arrest him and put him in prison. But thats NOT, of course, my FIRST pick as a solution to what to do with that rat....

Here we go again, right out of the dem playbook. Punish those money making corporations and hit their bottom line as hard as you can so they move to Virginia. Then you can have a debate and a pissing contest.
