Mayor Jim Ireton Does Shoots Blanks On Budget

They say if you pull out your gun you better fire it. Well, Ireton pulled out his guns through the Daily Times and shot nothing but blanks, are you surprised? We said he wouldn't veto it and we were right.

The fact that he delivered a budget that wasn't balanced to start with was amateur enough. The fact that the New City Attorney spelled out the fact that if he were to veto the Budget there would be NO BUDGET, period. The Mayor would then have to go to eh Council for every penny needed throughout the entire year.

Mayor Ireton thought he could throw his weight around like Barrie Tilghman used to but instead learned he has no power, as it should be. The Mayor is a figure head. The Mayor handles the administrative part of the City and not the legislative part.

The real decisions that drive and protect us taxpayers is done through the legislative Council body of government. The Budget the Council delivered was not only good, it blew away the Mayors Cinderella Budget favoring staff members in the Mayors Office only. My hat is tipped to the entire City Council with the exception this time of Laura Mitchell.

More importantly I want to take the time to educate our readers as to just how time consuming this process actually is. You see, the Council Members get paid something like $10,000.00 a year. During the budget process alone the time they consume for this probably takes up 90% of that salary. What the Mayor and Council are paid is a joke. And for those nay sayers wanting to come back here saying I simply want more money if I'm elected, forget it, the current Mayor cannot get their own pay raise, nor can the Council.

The vindictive moves by former Council Members like Mike Dunn, Gary Comegys and especially the former Mayor Barrie Tilghman removing medical insurance was a load of you know what. I'll be right up front about this right here and now. If elected I will do my very best to change that for others in the future. I will also do my very best to WORK with the Council President throughout the entire Budget process in order to make the final budget one in which we will all agree and there will be no more cat fights. Oh, believe me, I'll figure out ways to do so without raising taxes like Ireton tried so hard to do this year.

For far too many years proposals have come forth simply out of spite and budgets were passed just to harm certain people. Those day are over Ladies & Gentlemen. You want to see a Council move forward enjoying their work, you'll vote for me. If you want things to remain the same as they have for the past 14 years or so, you know what to do. No sweat off my back. The Mayors position only pays $25,000.00 a year anyway.

Nice going once again Daily Times. You sided with the Mayor and tried to BLUFF the Council, you failed. Your influence has dropped just like the Mayors has. Perhaps now you should go back to doing what your paid to do, tell the news and stop trying to control local government with your own set of directions.

Based on the information I have, the City Clerk has not received a budget ordinance back. Mayor Ireton failed to return the budget within 6 days, therefore the Councils Budget becomes law without the Mayors approval.

The story of Iretons life, shooting blanks.

What bothers me, Joe, is all these years the powers-that-be said his veto would give him his budget. Also, why the threat and drama if he wasn't going to do it?

I have to hand it to the council for staying quiet and calm through this. I couldn't have done it.

Go tell it to Obama, your idol.

When is Dr. Freddy going to get this loose cannon out of the classroom -- will it take a meltdown or worse involving some students?

25k Joe, will that pay for your cigars? At least its something.

I can't believe he wanted to raise taxes at a time like this. Everyone else is holding the rates or lowering them. Except Wicomico County of course.

Thank you to COhen, Campbell, Spies and Shields for sticking with a budget that was fair to taxpayers and employees and didn't raise our taxes. Especially, thanks to Campbell who always has a sharp pencil at budget time. This year was no exception. If you didn't see or hear the meeting where the budget was adopted by the council, it's worth the time.

"Does Shoots"

Combine that with the nice spelling of critcize earlier and our new mayor is a genius.

Farther down in the posts is one about a parasite that comes from cats. Does Jim Ireton have a kitten/cat? Maybe he was not drunk after all Saturday night when he called Mr. Joe! That would explain his craziness.....lol

i don't care if he can spell. That's what you have a clerical staff for. He has great ideas and tells it like it is.

No one wants to hear this but as per the law/council guidelines the budget is law. Don't like it tough, that is the law and follow it, change it later if you must but follow it. Same thing with running a stop sign removed two days after you were ticketed, TOUGH. That is life and pick up the pieces and go on, we have a business known as Salisbury to run so DO IT. Flush the "I" down the drain his salary should send him to rehab or kindergarten, tired of the road blocks.

Thank you to Campbell, Shields, Spies and Cohen for a budget that didn't raise our taxes. It appears that they worked much harder on hte budget than the administration did. AI think htat the threat of a veto by the mooer (more of our hard earned money for everything that Jim wants to spend it on) was nothing more than an opportunity to get his face on the front page again. Stop your nonsense mooer, stop your whining, stop your stunts. You were elected to work for us not to crate chaos with Mitchell for all of the city to have to endure.

Jim is Salisbury's own Barney Fife, except Jimmy can't find his only bullet!
