Should the government save the U.S. Postal Service?

No. Mikulski and Cardin think they have done us a favor by using pressure to keep the Easton processing center open, when in fact they are just prolonging the inevitable. The USPS is so over burdened with debt, largely due to bloated salaries and retirement benefits that it can not survive with its current business model

yes but revamp it all

NO
This part of our government is way out of control. (of course the rest of the government is the same)
A good example are the small units around the city , i.e. , hebron , nanticoke , bivalve ,quantico etc.
They are useless , they deliver mail 99% junk mail and talk on the cell phones all day.
I can't blame them , they have been doing it so long, they think it's ok.
Tested them a week ago . I can walk to my neighbor in 10 minutes , it took 3 days for them to get a piece of mail I sent.
Process improvement ?
These people are as dumb as a brick
and one of them has their husband helping part time, that could be the problem.
My question is "who is watching store" , who is providing a leadership role? Who is going to take the blame. Of course it will be the past presidents , certainly not Obama.
We are other alternatives like UPS and FedEx , far better service and less expensive.

Yes but revamp it like a previous post said. It is still needed and it is still used. However, the workers getting paid the ridiculously high wages they do is what is causing the problem.

Most people will use the postal service regardless. The USPS needs to stop running expensive commercials and selling merchandise trying to compete with private companies. They'll still get plenty of business.

Let it go bankrupt, void all the overpriced union contracts and start over.

Automotive industry did it, airline industry did it....

The county is next.....

No, No, No and NO. Its a business, run it like a business with NO government subsidies. That said, if the business is loosing money trim it back. Stop delivering the trash mail on Saturdays, trim the workforce and close the antiquated and under utilized facilities. If doing these things means the mail will take one or two additional days to get delivered so be it. Each month I only receive 3 or 4 legitimate pieces of mail, the rest is JUNK.

terrorists now have the technology to take out our communication systems.all technology as we know it would cease to function for an undetermined period of time.If the USPS had a backup system(and they may have)which would enable their services to continue regardless of a terrorist attack,I would be all for keeping them open. For that matter every government facility should have a backup system and routinely have drills to insure that all staff were current on it.

The USPS as it currently exists is a basket case and not worth saving. They need a new business model and I don't see anyone doing anything about it. Just prolonging a destined for failure Government doesn't make any sense. Making matters moor challenging is that it will take some investment to re-engineer the USPS and they are out of money. Mikulski and Cardin are simply throwing good money after bad while solving absolutely nothing.

I feel we should help, but only if the whole system is revamped. After all, we helped General Motors and the banks. We need the Post Office.
