Child Support Waiver Bill Passes State Senate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The state Senate has passed a bill modifying a law that allows Maryland prisoners to ask the court to suspend their child support payments.

Lawmakers approved the measure 25-21 Wednesday, allowing child support payments to be altered without any action from a prisoner.

Prisoners can already apply for a waiver because they have no income while in jail.

Opponents say it is unfair to children that criminals are allowed to walk away from support payments while in jail.

Others say that mounting debt of missed payments while incarcerated make it less likely someone will return to paying regularly once he or she is released.

The bill, which has already been passed by the House of Delegates, now moves to the governor to be signed.

WTF....does this mean that the inmates that are serving time for "non-support" are gonna be released? An example of gov't intervention that will again cost the tax payers additional $$$$$$. Lets see the data on the number of inmates that fit this mold...I bet it will make your head spin. Break the numbers down by demographics...if they dare to expose the facts.

other than the 4-star hotel amenities and free everything, this is just another reason to commit a crime!

I never really thought of it that way. If you don't pay your support you go to jail. If you go to jail you don't have to pay your support. Who will have to foot the bill for the support of these children while their parent is in jail?
This is another one of those things people need to be responsible for. It is their child and they need to take the responsibility for it. Stay out of jail and you won't have to worry about your child support getting backed up.
We need to STOP rewarding people for bad behavior.
