In my seven years of car ownership, the only time I've ever seen the "check engine" light was when I neglected to screw in the gas cap tightly enough on my Accord. That wasn't very useful. But our ex-sibling site, Jalopnik, made the case earlier this week that there's no good reason why car makers can't just do away with the "check engine" light altogether, and have our cars actually tell us what's wrong with them.

There are hundreds of things that can turn on the light, all mandated by the clean air act of 1990 that went in to effect in 1990.
This is what happens when you let government get into the auto business.
Dumbocrats and envirowackos are ruining this country!
We had a check engine light come on ...we had sensors replaced 3 times..at the tune of $1500.00...had someone else look at it..same computerized tool and replaced the spark plugs $300.00...big difference..Guess where losts my business..money grabbers.
My daughter in law had hers come on. cold weather whe needed more air in the tires..its a wonder they hadnt told her she needed the air CHANGED in the tires..:)
The next generation of cars will shut down if the light stays on for more than 45 days.

The low tire light is not the check engine light.
If you can't tell the difference you shouldn't be driving
If I ever find a non computerized car in really good shape I'm buying it.I had a slant 6 1965 Dodge that ran a trouble free 200,000 miles.Routine maintenance was all it required.
i have a mid 80,s non computer auto with 300k long live the carb and a mechanical fuel delivery system

Obviously you can not read. He was referring to his daughter in law.
A lot of people shouldn't be driving and not because of an idiot light.
I hate cars with computers most of the time they stay in your wallet a light for everything. Then they have to put it on a machine to tell you what code it is and usually it costs a small fortune .That is why all of are vehicles have no computers and just require oil changes and vehicle maintenence.
