Recreation & Parks Staff Members & Retired Cardiac Nurse Recognized For Life Saving Efforts

(Salisbury, MD) Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr. recognized Sharon Engster and Karen McInturff, coordinators of Recreation & Parks’ Happy Timers’ Club, and Carol Smith, a member of Happy Timers and retired cardiac nurse, after they helped save the life of a man who suffered a massive heart attack during a Happy Timers meeting in early January.

Each of these ladies have been praised for their efforts when Preston Tawes suffered a massive heart attack while attending a Happy Timers’ Club meeting at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on January 4. Engster, McInturff and Smith worked together to perform CPR and apply AED shock treatments on Mr. Tawes while contacting emergency services. Mr. Tawes survived due to the joint efforts of these ladies and the staff at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

The ladies were recognized by Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr. and members of the County Council in a presentation during a Happy Timers’ meeting at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Monday, January 30. Preston Tawes and his wife Ruth were in attendance.

What disheartens me about this story is that the Advanced Pre-hospital life support is completely left out. If not for the advanced cardiac monitoring, I.V. medications, and activation of the cardiac cath lab from the field by EMS, the chain of survival is broken.
Shame on Rick and PRMC's grandstanding to leave these heroes out of the story.
