BALTIMORE - Gov. Martin O'Malley sought to smooth over any raw feelings in Annapolis after his wife referred to opponents of gay marriage as "cowards," saying Sunday that words of compassion, understanding and justice are needed in the debate.
O'Malley, a Democrat who has made same-sex marriage legislation a priority this year, closed out his remarks at the 24th National Conference on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality by underscoring the need for using compassionate rhetoric. The governor said it's important not to let passionate views prompt people to use "words of hurt, rather than words of healing."
"Laws matter, but words also matter, and if compassion and understanding and justice are what we want, then we must choose laws and we must choose words of compassion, understanding and of justice," O'Malley said.

I believe Katie O'Malley does not have any desires of ever becoming a politician as well.
If I am wrong and she does plan on becoming one, she needs to focus on doing whatever it is that wives of State Governors do until she does in fact become a MD politician. Until then, she should keep her derogatory & belittling remarks of others to herself.
Gay rights should be voted on by the Maryland citizens, not by Annapolis.This is a moral issue for us.

The issue of gay marriage has to do with the moral compass of our society. Marriage is between one man and one woman. It teaches our children the values of having two parents who Love and care for them. Not that alot of heterosexual marriages are In good order in today's society. However there are certain things that a father or a mother can teach their son or daughter that they have a certain perspective on that the opposite sex can not.
If we as a society allows for gay marriage where do we draw the line with our moral compass. We are a nation that has been founde under god with christian values and nowhere has god stated that two gay people can wed in any religion that I have researched.
Question is what is to keep someone from having more then one wife or husband. I am sure someone will be offended by not being allowed to. What happens when a person dresses up as the opposite sex to go into the restrooms or dressing areas? The list goes on and on.
I am not against changing the law to give some sort of legal standing for gay couples. If they have chosen a partner they want to spend their lives with they should have the same legal protection as the rest of us do with making financial, life , or death choices, healthcare, etc. civil unions would be a fair compromise to this issue.

That really makes no sense. If, for some reason, a heterosexual wanted to marry someone of the same sex, they could if same sex marriage is allowed.
The discrimination is that married couples have well over 1,000 special privileges under the law. You might call them "special rights." For example, if a woman never works a day in her life outside the home and her husband dies one day after they get married, she will get his Social Security benefits. I, as a taxpayer, will be subsidizing her for the rest of her life. If they are not married (a choice if you are straight, not a choice if you are gay), she gets nothing. Gay people are not allowed to get married, but are taxed the same as anyone else. See the discrimination? That is only one obvious example.
As a psychiatrist, I know that homosexuality is an unnatural state, a perversion and a mental illness. This has been collective opinion of the psychiatric community for most of the 20th Century. The mass hysteria known as political correctness has forced the great majority of medical professionals to disavow this palpable truth. In truth, 98% of the world's Psychiatric community silently understands that homosexuality is a severe mental illness that should be treated, not encouraged.
