While many members of Congress probably consider themselves underpaid at $174,000 a year, their constituents beg to differ. A new poll from The Hill shows that 67 percent of likely voters think congressmen are overpaid.
Only 1 percent believe members of Congress should receive pay raises, and 24 percent say their pay should remain unchanged.
In another area of compensation, 69 percent of likely voters say congressional pensions should be eliminated, and only 15 percent believe they should be maintained.
Meanwhile, 64 percent of respondents say Congress is underworked and should be in session for more days. Only 15 percent say Congress should work fewer days, and 16 percent think Congress works about the right amount.

Everyone thinks they are under paid and the other guy is over paid. Just how people think.
Get over it... Seriously...
They give themselves a raise every year...
And if you actually do research, and not listen to what people say, then you would also know that Govt workers get paid 50% more than the average worker and did you know they make 2 to 3 times more than the service men whom are fighting for the rights of the govt to STEAL our money and health and freedoms...
10:14, how do you lump gov. workers in with congress? The faults in most of the "gov. workers overpaid" studies have been pointed out multiple times. Especially when many of those studies lump in your avg. McDonald's worker/Walmart cashier into the "average worker" category, but then they compare those wages to skilled labor jobs in the government (Reagan long ago started contracting out low skill jobs). It becomes a quick apples to oranges scenario.
Yes, Congress IS overpaid!
However, WE don't have anything to say about it, because WE don't make the rules in Washington.
That is what needs to be changed. WE should be deciding when they get a raise! They're "supposed" to be working for US!
WE are "supposed" to be their employer!
Employees around here don't get a raise unles the BOSS gives it!
They shouldn't be ANY different!
I believe the first things to be changed for Congress are the very things they have exempted themselves from that the average American must contribute to. Their pension and health care system is ridiculous compared to the average citizen.
To 1:41, you really should do some research before spouting your ignorant opinions online. Congressmen pay into their health and retirement systems the same as any other federal employee. They are on the same system as federal employees and are treated no differently.
2:13
you say they are treated no differently. You my friend are as full of crap as a Christmas duck.
You better do your research , they DON'T contribute the same as any other fed employee.Having worked on capital hill for many years and met with many in congress , I'll tell you that the money they make as salary is a mere drop in the bucket from what they receive from industry they represent.
This is not 1:41
To 2:26, they do, in fact, participate in the same retirement and health care system as any other federal employee. It's easy to look up if you want to educate yourself. Use the Google and let the veil of ignorance be lifted!
I'm sure if you really worked on Capitol Hill, you'd know how to spell it. You, like so many who comment here, love to spout off on topics you are completely ignorant about. Please, do some research before you feel inclined to go off. In the real world, when you aren't making anonymous comments on a blog post, everyone you speak to will know you are being ignorant. For your own sake, become informed before forming an opinion.
4:15 You are the idiot!
Hello 2:13 and 2:26. It's likely that neither of you are idiots. Congress is treated the same (see http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/uscongress/a/congresspay.htm), but it's also probably true that their actual pay from other sources is considerable in addition to their salary. 2:13 it would be interesting to hear some specific examples (leaving names out, but outlining the types and size of payments you've seen).
