The Pruitt family of Fredericksburg, Virginia has extra reason to be thankful this holiday season. Their much-loved 3-year-old pit bull mix, Petunia, had gone missing from their home in 2003. The Pruitts searched and searched for Petunia and finally gave her up as gone for good.
Eight years later, Yuba County California resident Meg Eden came across a stray pit mix wandering alone in a wildlife area. After taking the dog home for the night, she took the dog to an animal welfare center, and when they scanned the dog for a microchip, they found that she was registered to the Pruitt family over 3,000 miles away.
No one knows how Petunia traveled from Virginia all the way across the country to California or what adventures she may have had, and Petunia’s not talking, but this holiday season, the Pruitts are getting the present they’ve been waiting for, even if it took eight years to arrive. It’s an inspirational story, and for those of us looking for the perfect gift for our pet this year, think small—microchip small.
