Cursive is still being taught in D.C.-area classrooms -- for now. Many school systems are considering doing away with the requirement.

My son learned cursive in 3rd grade, but when I questioned why he was still not using it in 4th grade,he told me his teacher said he didn't need it. When I asked her about this, she said, in this age of technology they only need to be able to sign their names. Currently he is a senior in high school and still prints his work. He can sign his name, but has trouble reading cursive. I am still not comfortable with this idea, but I guess it is a sign of the times.
This is nuts. We have kids going through school and they can't read and now they're not even going to be able to write either.
God forbid if they ever find themselves without a computer or a cell phone with texting capabilities!
I can't belive anyone would be in favor of this!
10:19 AM - just because his teacher said he didn't need it doesn't make it so - I think what I would have done in your case is say ok, so you won't be learning this in school, but here at home you will be learning cursive and we are going to practice every night until you have it. Just my opinion.
I know grown people that can barely write their own names. Sad
Heck one works as a teachers aide and she needs help to spell "cat."
Go figure.
i kind of agree with 11:40. don't limit your kids education to just what they teach at school. teach other things at home if you want your child to learn them.
people are never happy. mad because they are teaching too much in school (like sex ed - something alot of parents don't teach at home) and mad because they aren't teaching enough (like writing in cursive). you can't please them all all the time.
It's hard to argue with the facts. At one time, buggy whips were in high demand.. but not any more. Why? Technological changes and societal changes. Cursive is a practically useless form of writing in today's age, sort of like the buggy whip. No reason to waste time, money, or resources on it.
