Sussex Board Denies Jusst Sooup Request

GEORGETOWN — With a 5-0 vote, the Sussex County Board of Adjustment denied a special-use exception to allow Jusst Sooup Ministries to serve food at a kitchen built as part of a "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project this summer in Coolspring.

Dale and Ken Dunning, who have been operating the ministry for the past 12 years, have been approved to run a home occupation at the Jusst Sooup Ranch, but because of zoning regulations they cannot serve food or have volunteers work in the kitchen. Thousands of volunteers and skilled workers donated thousands of hours to build the Dunnings a new home for their ministry.

This is unreal! Thanks Extreme Home NOT !!!!!

The law is the law...you would think those "organizing" this whole thing would have taken the zoning of such a place into account before building it...

Yes it is a shame that someone did not do their homework before the start of the project but should all the blame go to Extreme Makeover? The person who nominated the family apparently was unaware, the family was unaware, Extreme Makeover was unaware, the volunteers were unaware, the sponsors were unaware - that zoning had to be changed. The building was no secret so even the zoning board was unaware.

They say ignorance is bliss which certainly was true in this case. Everyone was so happy and felt so good about the soup kitchen and the wonderful plans for the Dunnings.

I can understand how the neighbors feel so now we need to look on the bright side. The Dunnings can continue with cooking soup in a much nicer kitchen in their new home and than transports it throughout the area.

What is done cannot be changed. Now all you volunteers need to put your heads together along with the Dunnings, and possibly the Extreme Makeover folks (at least give them the option) to see what can be done with the Soup Kitchen building. Can it be moved? Can the innards be stripped and sold to help defray expenses of removing building. Is there anything else the building could be used for that could be approved by zoning. Would Extreme Makeover do a show about getting rid of a building they helped to build. This is a lesson learned, as are most mistakes.

Come on folks, this is just a bump in the road that can be rectified once everyone decides to stop complaining and blaming. Just spend the time and energy looking for a solution. It is out there waiting to be discovered.

i think extreme makeovers should be sued for building it, the whole show is just flash, never build what people can afford to live in.why people even volunteer i dont know just to make money for some tv show who makes millions off it

6:18....and then the same people will complain that CEO's make too much money. CEO's make that kind of money because they come up with ideas to save corporations money. Like the idea to get volunteers and donations to help build these structures thus saving the network millions and laughing all the way to the bank!

When permitts where issused, this was not discussed, to what the building would be used for???????

There is nothing against one putting commercial equipment into a residential home. Many folks in high-end houses do this all the time.

I'm sure that the permits were issued for a residential dwelling -- not a commercial facility.

When they tried to use the building for something other than the zoning and permits were slated for, that is when the proverbial poop hit the fan....

Schell home builders are not new to construction in Sussex Co. and could have & should have checked all of this out before they donated the land to the Dunnings for their ministry. The Schell brothers must not have been able to do anything else with the parcel so donated it and just didn't bother to do what they had to have to determine if this was a viable use of this particular parcel. The Dunning's endeavor was based more in the Rehoboth area and the location moves them from the area they best served. How were the folks going to get to this new site? Was someone going to shuttle them there and then take them back after the meals or just drop them off and let them figure out their own way back. That is probably one of the biggest concerns the local residents had to the kitchen being in their back yard. There aren't any other commercial venues in that area. The location is on a two-lane road and would cause some serious congestion, and there is enough of that in the area during the summer months already.

I beg to differ with you folks saying they didn't know the rules. Because when you play in the game on a daily bases you know the rules. Extreme Makeover DOES NOT CARE about rules because they are just producing a TV show. The residence's around their new facility do not want the type of people they are helping in their neighborhood and rightfully so. Extreme Makeover decided to move the whole operation to a residential neighborhood they should have found a site for the kitchen closer to the base they are serving and one zoned for such operations. This is just one more case of where the people that are supposed to benefit from their supposed gift are hurt.

For once I agree with all aforementioned comments. Each have valid points, especially those suggesting legal action. In this case an out of state law firm should be involved. All relevant issues regarding restrictions, permits, codes etc should be presented to said legal counsel. If an out of state legal firm with no conflict of interest cannot resolve this issue, grounds for bankrupcy will have been established and the operation relinquished. This fine upstanding neihborhood will then have to deal with vacant bldgs. That equates to an attractive nuisance that would attract far worse than the previous.

Ask the people around the plaza in the center of salisbury what they think about bums and homeless living out front of them?

Why? And what does that have to do with this story?

I have read every opinion & comment and still don't understand how they got the permitts to build this building for the purpose intended. It was in every paper, on every news channel that they were coming and once they announced what family they were building for and for what purpose, do you think someone might have said something then??? I say, make your soup and have a LARGE dinner party every night. Times are tough and we all really need to stick together. I know, "the law is the law" and I'm not saying to break the law...but lets find a loop hole, you seem to find it Sussex County, when it suits you.

My only hope is that the people who don't want "the type of people they will be serving" in their precious back yard, will fall on hard times and need help only to be denied. What a selfish country this has become. Try giving your fellow man a helping hand before judging their circunstances. I just love the sue happy crowd, do they not understand all the frivilous lawsuits are the reason health care and other costs are through the roof. Lets sue a company that has built someone a brand new building, regardless if it can be used for it's intended purpose it is still a new building.

I understand how you feel but wishing someone ill will is not the way to go. Regardless of how much they may deserve it.
