Irene Weakens Slightly After Landfall

Hurricane-force winds and drenching rains from Irene battered the North Carolina coast early Saturday as the storm began its potentially catastrophic run up the Eastern Seaboard. More than 2 million people were told to move to safer places, and New York City ordered the nation's biggest subway system shut down for the first time because of a natural disaster.

Is not about the wind speed for us. All about the rainfall totals and storm surge.

Yes, and while we're all glad it's not a CAT 3 storm any more, people shouldn't get fooled that it's a cakewalk.

People think it's all about the wind. Underestimating the storm surge and flood is a mistake. Storm surges do a lot of damage and flooding can be deadly.

Irene isn't slamming into a landwall, then dying. She's rolling up the entire coastline with power to spare. Makes a difference.
