Gay Marriage Advocates Want O’Malley to Step Up Role

With New York’s embrace of same-sex marriage last week, advocates of gay nuptials in Maryland are pressing Gov. Martin O’Malley to play a more vigorous role as state lawmakers prepare to push the issue again.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, another Democrat whose national profile is on the rise, is widely credited with getting a bill through his divided legislature with a well-funded lobbying campaign to persuade conflicted lawmakers.

In Maryland, O’Malley supported a similar measure that fell short during this year’s legislative session but, unlike Cuomo, largely limited his advocacy to private conversations.

O’Malley made no mention of same-sex marriage in his agenda-setting State of the State speech in early February and did not highlight his support in news conferences, as he did with legislation to jump-start Maryland’s wind-energy industry and other priorities.

I wonder what it is like to be a Dumbocrat and be at the mercy of all those special interest groups.

And the republicans have the bible thumpers, NRA, oil companies, banks etc

11;07, you believe Dems. are the only ones held in check by the special interests? Who's the real dummy?

It is past time to get marriage equality done in Maryland...

I am gay, and I would like to see Maryland pass equal rights for gay people.

I would also like to see Maryland obey the Second Amendment and stop infringing on the right to keep and bear arms.

In terms of priorities, I have to say it's with the Second Amendment. Not being able to be married in Maryland won't kill me, but 30 "youths" on a rampage might. - David Hearne

marriage is a religious intstitution that serves no purpose for gays. they cant procreate with each other. they get a title. thats it. leave HOLY matrimony alone!

and in that regard, government needs to get out of the religious business.

Drew:

I think you got the wrong party when it comes to banks and wallstreet. The Dumbocrats are way in bed with the banks and wallstreet. Just ask Barny Frank, Geitner, Obama, and Chris Dodd.
Why do you think this economy is such a mess?

11:53 You do realise people can get married without the church involved?

We are discussing civil marriage as recognised by the government.

yeah, oil, GOLDMAN SACHS, Lehman brothers and yes OIL again, all are heavy donors to Democrats.

They switch allegiances to who will be in power next as so their power does not diminish. the American people have not informed YOURSELVES and that is why you throw out these DUMB blanket generalizations. jeez. wake up. and stop just carte blanch believing every word you hear on TV.

why can't we the people of MD actually have a referendum and let the majority decide? that is how this illegal $ for college is going to be decided and that is how the "marriage" should be decided.

you who are proponents of this, are in the minority, you know it, and you know the only way to pass it is to beg for equality or use the liberals in power to get it. Bet ya when it goes to referendum, you lose. just saying the reality. and in the end my point will be lost, cause your not watching it on TV

12:35 Anon,

"why can't we the people of MD actually have a referendum and let the majority decide?"

Allowing the majority to vote on the civil rights of the minority is generally likened to four wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner.

The real debate is not equal rights for homosexuals (which I'm all for of course) but redefining the word 'marriage'. I'm not sure what it is with the homosexual politics that requires redefining words all the time but it's very Orwellian. If groups can redefine words for good purposes then groups can also redefine words for bad purposes.

They do not generally believe in God or his work; therefore, like every other time we have the argument it falls on deaf ears.

food for thought:

whether you people want to believe it or not, this nation was founded by men who believed in God I AM. In the last 60 years, we have seen him removed from everything except the words on our money. Why do you think this country has declined after WW2? Food for thought. It is called Divine Providence, but again, it falls on Deaf Minds.

Put it to referendum. It is a Government of the People - of ALL the people, not of the few. You don't like it - GO TO NY, MASS, or CA or any other state that supports it.

1:32 Following your word logic then, it is wrong to call anything except the Catholic Church a church.
They are the original christian religion and anything else is a variation.

Drew, you are the only one who knows what he is talking about here. . .we are talking about "civil marriage" not "religious marriage". This bill would not require pastors to marry gays if that is against their beliefs. Conservatives, this does not concern you. . .you will not be hurt in any way. People need to spell these terms out before moving into a discussion or article so that we are all on the same page. . ."civil marriage" is what gays want. . .not religious marriage. They want this only because civil unions are not recognized between states and because civil unions do not provide them the same protections as "civil marriage".

If the STATE is going to sanction ANY contract (which is what marriage is in the eyes of the government) I don't see how it can exclude gay people. It does not infringe upon any person's religious opinion that they are in sin, going to hell or that it is morally wrong. But those things need to be debated in the CHURCH HOUSE not the STATE HOUSE!

and with that said
denying anyone their right to legally union in fact threatens the legal sanctity of all unions
law is not belief based
thank god

then come gay rights, then comes being able to marry children. Just what NAMBLA would love. NO to gay marriage rights in MD.

WOW,

O'malley looks pretty happy with his gay boyfriend beside him in their after school dance photo.

O'Malley is a freak like Obama.

8:34 I would be careful who I called a fool. It wasn't that long ago when many people though being gay was being absurd. Typical for people who support gay rights to call those that disagree with them names. Do what ever you want in your bedroom just don't scream that you don't have the same rights when you do. Can I marry my dog if you get your gay marriage rights? When does it end?

so if I am a 20 year gay male and attracted to a 15 year teen male, can I marry them? After all I am just born this way. I can't help it at all. I am born gay and born attracted to teen males. See the faulty logic in gays saying their born that way. I don't think your born that way you choose to stay in your sin just like anyone else who chooses sin. God help us all if MD passes gay marriage.

You're a fool, 10:53, a fool! :o)

>animals can't consent so, no (though in some countries people have married animals)

Well, 10:59, you're wrong! :o)

and kids can't consent, so no (though in some states kids of around 16 can get parental consent to marry)

Neither kids or animals have the contractual capacity required to form a marriage.

HAHA you folks are dumber than clams. Hee Hee!

G'nite Y'all ;o) Hope you learned

something.

12:41 so are you for wanting something that is natural for the body. If man was supposed to have sex with another man their would be a natural region for him to stick it in. Thats all I need to know it is not natural. Why can't a pedophile be justified in their actions of saying they are born that way as gays say they are. I am a lot smarter than you give credit. For you to insult shows how smart you are. Never once have I resorted to name calling. It takes discipline & self control. I don't have to give into my urges. You must give into yours with name calling. Bha Bha Bha.
