Will The Salisbury Fire Department Ever SHUT UP?

In a recession, do we complain about no cost of living increases or are we thankful we have a job at all?

It seems in the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County employees just can't seem to keep their mouths shut and be thankful they have a job.

Let me assure you of one thing, (on the record). If I were County Executive or the Mayor of Salisbury, JOBS WOULD BE CUT. Jobs would have been cut at least 4 years ago. However, both the City and County are run by Democrats and Bureaucrats who actually believe we're NOT in a depression. Some are now calling it "The Great Recession" because they're too afraid to admit this country is in a depression. I'll not get long winded about $4.00 a gallon gas and $5.00 a gallon for milk.

What I will spend time on is the Salisbury Fire Department feeding us yet another line of crap that they so desperately need medical technicians. I have listened to this BS for the past 7 years and quite frankly I'm tired of hearing about it. They propose these positions and then never fill them, allowing for these additional funds to sit idle year after year just in case they need the extra money.

They claim calls are up 8 percent. OK Folks, have YOU seen an 8% increase in FIRES over the past year, NO! However, take the fire in Delmar last week. Every damn fire truck on God's Green Earth was there to put out a fire in which the structure was already gone, burned to the ground. The 8% increase includes ALL of the automobile accidents these Idiots use to take out multi million dollars worth of Fire Trucks, JUST IN CASE THERE IS A FIRE.

All too often we see these departments making such claims and then they wonder why they get furloughed. Look at your own Department Heads, fools! If they'd STOP asking for such BS items there would be more money to pay your salaries. What cracks me up the most is how all of these Volunteer Fire Departments survive without paid employees. That's the America I grew up in. Today its a group of winers and complainers bellyaching they're not getting a fair share of things.

As far as I'm personally concerned, the SFD can shut their mouths for the next 20 years. They have received just about everything imagineable while the SPD has been smacked in the face. So now lets talk about increases. Crime is on the rise for the past 10 years in Salisbury, yet this mayor and the former Mayor IGNORE requests for additional funding and Officers, go figure! The SFD doesn't come to the table and say, you know, we appreciate everything you have done for us over the past 6 years, we're going to take a hit this year to help our BROTHERS and SISTERS in the Police department as we have seen them sit idle for far too many years.

No, today's generation is greedy and lead by democrats who want, want, want! Do tell me how Pepsi and Perdue will be able to afford a 18% rate increase in their sewer rates? You ask everyone else to foot the bills for Democrat Mayor Barrie Tilghman and her WWTP screw up and then you want more staff while Pepsi and Perdue are forced to lay off people because of rate increases?

You mark my words. The democratic desperation of increasing rates will be the death of the Eastern Shore. Oh, I know how powerful a statement I just made is. However, know this. Perdue will relocate as well as Pepsi and other companies just like them. When they do, guess what, YOUR JOBS WILL BE GONE and the recovery will take a good 20 years just to get back to where we used to be. People like the Department Heads of the Fire department will then appreciate what they had.

Yeah, it will be the old hitting rock bottom that will finally force Democrats to see the light. In the mean time they'll bill everyone to death until there is no more, (just as I have been preaching for the past 6 years, or so).

STOP taking out Fire Trucks to vehicle accidents, period! You have what, 6 chase vehicles in the Fire department? Go to the scene and if there's a FIRE, call in one of the trucks. In the mean time, carry a fire extinguisher. You cannot save every life, vehicle or structure. In most cases, they're INSURED anyway. The money you save just might help to get that cost of living adjustment and or furlough days removed.

I, (for one) am sick and tired of these crybabies with their wants, not needs. Be happy you have a job. I have many friends out of work, some for more than a year now. Oh, and if you want to stop crying about the cost of living increases, next time vote for a Republican and you'll see gas go back down to $2.00 a gallon and milk less than $2.00 a gallon, where it should be. Start to recognize much of this inflation is your own fault.

Now if we can get you to say all that about the govt... I mean the higher govt... Like Obama and such... When will people understand that when your low on cash you won't spend... then you raise taxes so we won't spend even more... then you have a depression, oh like we have now...

Once has to remember that the price of gas became ridiculous under bush as well.
It fluctuates, and it's something as a nation that VOTING WILL NEVER FIX!
The people need to get active, protests, petitions, it won't matter who is in power, they will always do their own thing unless the PEOPLE MAKE THEIR VOICE HEARD!

So lets start protesting! Let's make our voices heard! Once the people start protesting En Masse, just like what happened recently Wisconsin. He's getting the boot essentially, there's calls for another election because he SERIOUSLY effed up.

If we can manage to do that with a PRESIDENT, you can bet that for at lest several years afterwards, any more presidents we have will listen to US. But of course, we can't stop protesting.

This is an excellent post!!
I will add that some volunteer dept. take advantage of the equipment and use it for personal uses. Some have paid medical help , which is needed and I do appreciate.
Salisbury fire dept. has a bunch of spoiled babies working there.
In most cases the fire dept. do more damage than the fire , it's
recorded.

The new fire chief is asking for "medical technicians?"

What does Jeff Simpson know about medical technicians?? He is not even an Emergency Medical Technician himself. He is not qualified to be the fire chief, a chief officer, a company officer or even a basic firefighter EMT. Someone has been duped again. LMAO!!

Tell Salisbury Fire Department to get a stimulus grant from Obama before Michelle Obama spends it on WalMart Items...

Gordy must be livid. How dare you question the SFD.

Since the 911 incident , the fire depts. think they are all heroes.

I will say this , we will have some events that make the 911 look small. We have been warned , lets see what happens to the heroes then. They may have earn their keep!

Actually it's too bad that the Salisbury Fire Department is not volunteer; I'm talking about the new fire palace. Volunteer Fire Departments elsewhere have to raise money by having dinners, carnivals, etc. Salisbury Fire Dept. just sits on their hineys and expect the citizens to pick up the tab on anything and everything they want to do. Well, we're sick of it. Learn to do with what you have. We out here have to manage our households on less when everything costs more, you need to learn to do the same. Spoiled brats everyone of you.

Joe this is important stuff. We put Jim Ireton as mayor to clean up that corruption and he brings in someone worse than Gordy. Wasting tax dollars is not what we voted for.

not to worry, the new fireboat will fix all the problems. thanks sjd

Yeah, the Fireboat! SFD needs Bait people, preferably experienced, even Master skilled help. There's a lot of fishing parties planned.

I usually do not post to this kind of trash talk on here, however i think some things need to be cleared up. The EMT-I's of the Salisbury Fire Department are operating as Advanced Life Support providers. They are a step above the EMT-B and a step below the EMT-Paramedics. These people have gone to school to better themselves and the community by being able to provide advanced life support. There is no reason they could not get compensated for their advanced life support skills. The cost of giving these folks a few percentage raise is not that big of a deal. There are maybe 4 people that would get that raise. It would be no different than if you were a doctor and got the pay of a fast food cook. These people deserve a raise.
Secondly, the fire boat issue has been beat to death on here. The boat was paid for with a homeland security grant. The money would not go back into the federal reserve if Salisbury did not accept the grant, it would instead have gone to some other department somewhere else. Its only cost will be fuel and upkeep. Yes!! i know that with the economy being horrible, its bad timing. however this boat is basically FREE. It will last the city of Salisbury 20-30 years at minimum.
Have at it!!! I am sure the negative comments are going to fly.

Hey 3:34 - wake up

Salisbury got a Grant to PURCHASE a fireboat, not to MAINTAIN it. If you knew the difference, you would not be using words like "free" or "it only cost". This is not YOUR money to spend thank you, it is the taxpayer's. I think many would be interested in YOUR estimate of what this fireboat will cost taxpayers to MAINTAIN for the 20-30 years you state it will last. This asset does not exist now so I expect NEW revenues (tax increases) will be needed unless you have a secret source.

Citizens appreciate the skills that EMT personnel offer but are you suggesting that they should appreciate it to the point to pay you more? Is this a "shakedown"? Bus drivers are pretty important too. Nurses are pretty important too. Shouldn't they be paid more? Where do you stop?

If you need more income for your family, get another job like most others do.

Do your job and stop whining or change jobs.

what are the maintaince fee s for 20-30 years. who pays these fees and how many people wont get a raise or will be let go just to maintain this free boat. The big joke is there AINT NO WAY THIS BOAT WILL LAST 20-30 years without major overhauls

A fireboat you all dont have enough people to run a fire department. who you gonna call to run the fire boat if everyone is driving a truck

having a boat.. has 2 happy days.. day you buy it and day you sell it.. boats do nothing but cost money on top of money to maintain and repair. marine services are not cheap!

if they really need emts and paramedics take all the people out of the admin side and put them back on the ambulance. isnt there a captain sitting over there who isnt allowed to have anything to do with "operations"? put the pirate back on the ambulance where he belongs.

Anonymous said...

There was an employee that resigned just 2 weeks ago to take a job in Baltimore County as a paramedic. He was employed with the City for 2 years and the City tax payers paid for him to go to Paramedic School. He was paid a salary to go to Paramedic School in Chesapeake College in Easton where the tuition was much higher than paramedic school at Wor Wic Community College. This guy was allowed time off to go to paramedic school and all tuition and books paid for with tax payer money. The guy just quits and owes the City of Salisbury NOTHING!! The tax payers gave this guy a free education in order to get a better paying job in another county. Then to top that off the new fire chief replaced him with a basic firefighter EMT with absolutely no experience. This is the kind of crap that is going on in the Salisbury Fire Department. The new fire chief needs to be canned immediately and the Mayor needs to resign.

well folks what you dont know is what the chief is trying to do to the wonderful men and ladies of the salisbury firedepartment is he is trying to or wanted to staff two station's with 24/7 shifts and now has back down to holding the duty crew at station 1 from 7a to 7p now when there times they stay are 7 am to 530p. He is also putting a paid house man at a station because he says the vollys cant handle a high call vol when its only really 1 station that has a issue but they STILL GET OUT. The vollys are very upset right now because the new chief is tryin to take there station's away from them. ALso he is takin a ladder truck that vollys pay the payments on and putting at a diff station and taking a engine from a station that the vollys pay for and putting at a diff station and giving that station a old engine tanker that they have to put back together cause the chief wont allow them to take the tools they bought off the engine to put on the engine tanker that they dont want back. This chief is a dumb ass and the mayor should start looking before the men and ladies will fight hard to keep what they got and send him packin. This chief is a bad liar and has lied so many times and broke so many rules you dont have enough fingers and toes to count with. Gordy has no say in anything and is not in the loop at all he has no clue whats going on and hell he is happy going on his vacations. Hopefully everybody reads this and see's that the chief needs to be replaced he is put the public in danger by what he is doing and response time with be bad and it shouldnt be. The men and ladies at the SFD can only fight so hard to keep what they been doing that the chief is tryin to take hopefully every body will see this and write the mayor cause the vollys needs everybodys help.. Joe more will be posted dont wanna drowned you out this is by far what he has done to the vollys so far. OH BY THE WAY CHIEF SIMPSON THEY WERE THERE WHEN YOU GOT THERE AND WILL BE THERE WHEN YOUR GONE.. US TAXS PAYERS AND EXC PEOPLE WILL HELP THIS BUDDY.

I agree in part, however, most city employees are not squawking. Heck, only code and compliance, police and fire were mentioned in the DT article today. There are literally hundreds of other city employees that do not agree with the constant whining of the fire dept. They rec'd their fire palace and fire boat, while GIVING AWAY (basically) an asset (firehouse).

Meanwhile, the WWTP mess up has cost those people that sweep the street, pave the roads, actually have to do the crappy work at the WWTP, provide water, etc...

Also, between the gifts to the fire dept and the mess up at the WWTP every dept has slashed its budget. Don't blame the $9/hr city workers in the street department for your rough roads, blame the WWTP & fire dept- they are the ones that used the money that could have gone to your roads. Same with snow removal and many other services.

So I ask everyone, don't throw every city worker under the bus, because believe me, most of them see all these facts and money wasted and wonder how long it is going to go on before they lose their jobs.

Hey anon 10:00PM You're the one that's confused. 8:26 has hit the nail on the head. I'll never refer to Jeff Simpleton as "Chief" again as that would be disrespecting the title and position. This guy has absolutely NO EXPERIENCE OR BACKGROUND WITH VOLUNTEER OR COMBINATION FIRE DEPARTMENTS.

How did this guy get the job?! Somebody better get him out of town before it's too late, if it isn't already. Nobody can measure the damage he has already done and is continuing to do.

The Fire Department is only a by-product of the ROOT CAUSE.

The ROOT CAUSE of Salisbury's problems is the inept Mayor.

Nothing will change until he is RECALLED.

LET'S ROLL!!! RECALL!!!

I have read all the comments and I have to say I'm pretty disgusted with the people of Salisbury. Do you not see that the fd is essential. The men and women of the sfd are essential employees. They go to work and answer your calls without judgement. Who's going to come get you if you're having a heart attack or stroke, Mr. Albero? No, I think not. If you are trapped in a car from an accident do you want a chase car to show up then call for a fire truck when they see you are stuck? No...that will take valuable time you may not have. If your house is on fire and your kid is stuck in a bedroom is mr Joe neighbor running in there to get the kid? No... It will have to be a special kind of person like a firefighter. Yes cops, nurses, and medical technicians deserve to make a little extra. they are doing a job that most people can't stomach. We don't criticize them we should thank them. It's their job I know. But do you have any idea the stress that job carries. It's life and death everyday. Old or young it doesn't matter. They risk their lives for you nomatter the weather or catastrophic event they are there not you. You people take this for granted and it's disgusting. Bravo to the one that left after he became a paramedic. He or she is in balto county making more money and being appreciated for his or her work. I commend that person.
Be careful for what you ask for people of Salisbury. There are plenty of opportunities out there for good firefighters and medical technicians. You can lose some good people and one day you will call 911 and you might not get anybody and if you do it will be the bottom of the barrel personnel because the people of Salisbury refuse to give a little extra to the people that show up nomatter what. Believe me when I say this... I know a lot of people in the fire service and people trying to get in the fire service. None of them mention Salisbury when they talk about a good Place to be.

Does anybody on this blog really know how a fd is run? Everywhere in the country they send some kind of fire appuratis to the scene of a car crash. Most Places send a fire truck and medic to most medical runs. The reason being is that it's better to have to resources there and not need them than not have it when you need it. It's for your safety and theirs. Do you think a crew of 2 people can carry a person that weighs 300 lbs out of a house by themselves? That's what they deal with alot. You don't get it Salisbury. Unless you take some time to understand what is going on then maybe you should close your mouth. Or grow a pair and join the sfd and then you will truely see what this job takes.

The running of a city fire department is not rocket science, it is about managing risk, nothing more nothing less. What risk is acceptable to the citizen and the governing board? In order to understand the situation everyone must first understand what are the hazards faced by the community. Then the degree of danger posed by these hazards must be graded, how likely are they to occur, how many fatalities will be acceptable if incident does occur, how much property damage will be acceptable. Then once you have established a list of hazards most likely to occur and which ones of those will create the most loss (life then property), you then need to establish an operational plan to mitigate either the occurrence of an incident, or mitigating the effects of the incident if such an incident is unavoidable.
The plan will establish what the acceptable risks will be for various hazards, and identify the resources necessary to ensure that any incidents involving those hazards will be stabilized within those acceptable risk limits. The plan should also identify how resources will be managed. What type and size of apparatus is necessary, what equipment will be required to mitigate or stabilize incidents. What are the required staffing levels for that apparatus, what are the training levels for staff that are required to operate specialized equipment? What type of apparatus should respond to particular types on incidents to ensure those incidents stay within the acceptable risk limits? The plan will define what acceptable response times for incidents within the jurisdictions initial response area.
Resources cost money not only to purchase, but to maintain and retain. Excess in expenditures occur only when money is spent for any other reason than to manage that acceptable risk defined by the local government.

Joe you need to keep this at the top. I know for a fact there is more corruption and wasteful spending in the fire department that will be exposed.

Just to clarify.. Mr Truitt was before the council representing the career union local 4246 brothers and sisters. The volunteers do not get the chance to address the council directly,

Anonymous said...

Yes they are essential just as police are essential. That doesn't mean they are to be given a blank check.

I don't drive around Salisbury in fear of a fire. I do fear driving around Salisbury in fear of some low lifes walking the streets.

I would rather see money go to police and to the volunteers in small towns that get out of their bed to go put out a fire.

Man up and quit crying.

DOIN THE DEED said...

Lets not be in such a hurry to give the money to the volunteers in the "small towns". All the money needs to be held up until all the departments in the county(this includes salisbury) are willing to open their books and install qualified people in leadership positions instead of the local untrained idiot who can win a popularity contest.

I also hate to tell the volunteers it is within the chiefs rights to move equipment and personnel to make sure the city is protected properly. I don't know the man but he inherited a disaster with the way the department has been run and some of the clowns in leadership positions on both the career and volunteer side. His first priority should be retraining the department to actually put fires out instead of burning buildings down or having to go back the next day for the same fire.
