Amusement Parks Focus On Deals, Not Just Thrills

New attractions, offers aimed at budget-minded families

Born and raised in New Jersey, Brenda Jones has loved theme and amusement parks all her life. "Growing up here, we always had [Six Flags] Great Adventure, Hersheypark, the boardwalk in Ocean City, all of that stuff," she said. "We went all the time because it was an inexpensive thing to do."

Recently, though, she’s found her love tested in the face of everything from add-on fees for parking to the high cost of concessions. "My niece took her three kids to the boardwalk last year and it was $4 a ride for each one and $6 each for a waffle with ice cream. We just can’t afford to go anymore."

Amusement parks, still stinging from their own economic challenges of the past few years, are taking note. While pricey, new interactive attractions reigned last summer, this season visitors will see fewer new big-ticket rides and more deals pegged to multi-day visits.

This finacial mess was all planned by the progressives and the other Democrats.

Stop drilling for oil in our Country and the price of Gas goes up. When gas goes up so does everything else.

You do not have to go to Harvard for that; just some common sense.

You can't even afford to go spend the weekend in Ocean City anymore. It's cheaper to pay for gas and go away than it is to try to pay for a hotel in Ocean City.

All the business people in O.C. whine like hungry babies every year, bemoaning the drop in tourist traffic and revenues. Well, the tourists are tired of being soaked by the various police jurisdictions, who look at summer traffic as "just what the doctor ordered" to boost annual revenues. Once you cross the bridge into the Eastern Shore, there is a GAUNTLET of cops with the latest technology (and the latest "dangerous" thing they have to put a stop to) bent on taking as much money as possible from the tourist. Welcome to the Eastern Shore...so nice to have you here. Then they get to Ocean City (or Rehobeth, or Lewes, etc, and are forced to pay $7 for a hamburger, $6 for an ice cream cone, $250 a night for a hotel (maybe $300-500). Middle class Americans have $3000-5000 to spend a week on vacation?? LOL! None that I know of...Because you own an ice cream shop in O.C and want to work 5 months out of the year doesn't mean you get to charge $7 for a $2 product (and think its okay). The same goes for Trimpers and the every other amusement/food/hotel trying to make a million in a few months.

Staycation folks.. Stay at home beat the crowds, play in the yard with the kids or the nieghbors kids.

Be creative like our forefathers and do things around the house. No one says you have to travel to enjoy life.
