Last November Wicomico voters trekked to the polls and elected six (6) Republicans to the County Council. Each GOP candidate emphasized their fiscal conservatism. Is the Republican council majority as conservative as they represented last fall?
During last week’s budget hearing I noticed that some councilmembers seemed to be keeping score. One council member has been heard to say that they just don’t know anyone who is opposed to County Executive Rick Pollitt’s proposed 5 cent rate increase. You know, I think that councilmember may be on to something.
Last year many of us worked hard to elect conservatives to our local government. Now that there are six self-identified conservatives on the council, maybe most of us thought that we could breathe easy; the council will do the right thing.
Councilmembers Bob Culver (R-At Large), Joe Holloway (R-5), and Stevie Prettyman (R-2) seem to be working pretty hard to identify cuts that can mitigate Pollitt’s rate increase. While it would be wrong to state that the other three Republican members agree with Pollitt’s budget, we hope that they remember the statements they made 7 or 8 months ago. It’s very possible that they just haven’t heard from the very people that elected them last year.
CALL your councilmembers up. Let them know where you stand. Otherwise, we can blame no one but ourselves if the county’s real property rate goes up this year.

I am one of the people that thought I could rest easy.
How can the council possibly give any creedence to those that come to meetings and squeal that they need this program or that program or beg them not to cut here or there? Hello? These are the very people that live and die based on government money.
I don't expect to have to constantly beg council to do the right thing when like spoiled children this or that county special interest group (which means anyone who works or lives on county money) comes crying saying PLEASE don't gore my ox!
Line item guys, line item.
DO something on Council, Do what a legislative body does, legislate for the fiscal good of this county. CREATE legislation, then pass it, you have a super majority.
It seems instead all you do is REACT to to the great eater of our tax dollaqs and he who has never skipped the all you can eat buffet!?!?
Council, if you are reading this: Do what the revenue cap allows, and give yourselves some extra $$$(however meager)to provide services that are sorely lacking. Raise the Rate the maximum allowed by this wonderful, wonderful revenue cap.
I am one of those people who squeal that these loser "representatives" (WHO do they "represent"??) SAY one thing to get elected (generally, whatever it is you want to hear), then do as they damn well please (generally, whatever the biggest "campaign contributor" AKA- briber, wants done). They lie and cheat the people at every turn. As an example, look at this Laura Mitchell chick -- "I'm going to represent the people. Give them a say...." The FIRST thing she does is try to eliminate the Lord's Prayer???? Other arguments aside, is THAT the best thing she could think of as "the people's" business?? And of ALL the people in her ward, does she think THAT was what the majority of voters wanted to do? THAT'S what she was elected to do??? Typical, self-centered, egotistical, "I know whats best for YOU" politician. And she's just a rookie. Wait til she learns the ropes and starts getting BIG bribes. And for you people looking for an angle, yeah, I called her a "chick"....
If you voted for the revenue cap, you shouldn't have any problem with the increase. It is following the guidelines set by the false bill of goods that so many were duped into voting for. If you are against it, you are just a crybaby.
3:32--I see ole Culver is living up to it.
Imclain, she might be a chick, but you are a different sort of barnyard animal commonly known as a donkey or ass.
Chicken little go eat the corn in the outhouse.
If either council member votes yes to raise taxes has not spoken to no one in this county that is out of work, lacking work because property owners and business are cutting back. Everything is going up and we have no more money for taxes.
Refute what I said. Did she (or not) do what I said? And do politicians do just what I said they do? I know you HATE the facts, but try to control yourself.
