Why?? I put 40 years in corrections and havent had a cola in my ss or retirement check in 3 yrs.When i finally quit work iwas ready and i never complained about my working status like these wimps of today.Union babies.
Yes. Why should they be penalized just because they work for the city and not a corporation. They have to eat just like the rest of us.

Why should they get a cost of living increase? Social Security recipients aren't getting any increases and they of all people are the ones who need it the most! Everybody has got to learn to tighten their belts. I don't like it, but I have no choice!

They should be no different. Raises for City/County employees equates to more taxes and we're not making any extra to pay that tax increase. They seem to forget just WHO pays for their wages and benefits!
I hope everyone realizes that the question is pertaining to Delaware employees and not Salisbury or Wicomico County. According to everything I've heard, unless enough employees retire, the county will be increasing furloughs and more possible layoffs. That means more of your neighbors and friends without jobs in this community.

No! Not until the county employees are no longer being furloughed!!! Right now all county employees, except teachers, are being furloughed. Some people are being furloughed up to 10 days. Once the furloughs are over, then consider to give cost of living. In the meantime, if they can afford cost of living, then they should be able to reduce the number of furloughed days to each employee!
we haven't got one the past 2 years... why would we get one now? we have already taken pay reductions through furloughs and increases in health care costs. i'm happy to have a job.

Abolutely NOT! COLA's are outdated. No one getting social securtiy right now should get them either. The government should be based on ability to pay and the city and county does NOT have the ability to pay. SS Cola's should be based on whether someone paid into it or not. And, many of the people who collect SS today never paid ONE DIME into the fund. Absolutely NOT!! SS will going under for the ones WHO DID PAY INTO THE FUND because of what has been paid out to those WHO NEVER PAID ANYTHING INTO THE FUND. It is not fair!! Period.
I am an RN and I haven't had a raise in five years so just because you work for a corporation does not mean you are getting a raise in this economy. No, I do not think they should get a pay increase at this time.

yes i do, if you look closely to line items in the budget you will find spending that does not need to be. examples include, donations to meals on wheels & wor wic tech, though they are worthy causes, they are not the county governments core responiablity. It is also proven, company fleets are expensive, the county needs to remove alot of their cars and pay persons to use their own vehicle. (no i am not talking about the sheriffs department or county roads) some persons are turning in reimbursements for a couple of dollars a day, really, what ever they are doing can be handle a better more efficent way.

No, they should not. The city and county can't afford to fix the roads and they can't afford to cut the grass and who knows what else they can't afford. Well, they can't afford to give people raises either. I haven't had one in several years and my mother who is on social security hasn't had one in several years either. Why should they be any different than any one else?
1:47 PM - I feel your comment was the most thoughtful and points to the root of the issue whether to issue raises or not. If the money is not there, legislators should not spend it on anything. If there's a way to reduce spending such that a surplus is achieved, they should spend it on whatever makes the most sense whether that's for raises or increasing the perks of management.
I can say most of the employees of the Government are people that failed and couldn't make it in the private sector. So no they don't deserve a thing.

3:38 No one is overworked, that's for sure! And, I agree that most have failed when they left a govt job and went into the private sector. The pace was too much for them. But, I say NO because the county simply cannot afford it. If Tricky Ricky will cut the number of employees to a normal business staffing, we'll see how many will make it quick.
I guess this question is yes, if your a City or County employee, but no if your not. However, ask the ones who aren't employed by the gov't and they'd say the same thing for their jobs. By the way there are no union employees in the city/county gov't. Also, to much money is wasted on dumb *^%& and not on employees. However, I recall the top earners requesting a pay raise in the City, so eat table scraps you low lifes.

Government tries to recruit the best people they can for the dollars that they can offer. In many cases, there aren't comparable jobs in the private sector. Why is it that all of you idiots have such a problem with county/city employees. We work just like you do, and have to listen to your fat mouths that have no clue half the time about what you are talking about. I haven't had a raise in a great number of years, I have received furlough days, I have seen a number of my co-workers laid off, and more to go with the retirement. That means that there will be less people to do the same, or more, amount of work. Just because there isn't money to do certain things, it doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of things being done. I have never been one to complain about my pay reductions, because I do feel fortunate to have a job. But remember, we are people with families just like you. Most people I work with make quite a bit less that one would in private sector. Many of you are just upset because private sector isn't fairing too good these days. Historically, private sector has always exceeded local goverment. So......quit bashing someone simply because their job is for local government. Somebody has to do it, and I chose to stick with the county for the security, and overlook the lower wages. Maybe when times get good again, you can fill out an app. with the county, but I know that wont happen because they have had a hard time getting people to apply over the years because of the pay. This post really doesn't make sense to me, because I don't forsee any raises or colas for a while. The county doesn't even get Colas anymore. The new pay system is set up that when a raise is offered, usually a couple percent, that is for merit and cola. (sure gives incentive)
Yes county/city employees should get pay increases. I know county employees have been 4- 5 years with out a pay increase.I understand that salaries are paid by the tax payers but you have to remember most of the employees are tax payers too. Don't get it twisted the county is going to spend the money regardless. Just like the Detention Center just bought a buffer for $6,000.00. This is sick. Give people a little bit of money and they will spend much more than they can afford. Six years ago Wicomico County was under paying their employees by 24%. Just remember one thing you get what you pay for. A cheap tool just can't handle the job.

You complain about City employees getting a COLA or raise, look at most of the toys (SFD) and useless crap the city buys, what did it cost to print up All America City and slap it on everything, T-shirts and bill boards? or everytime a citizen or friend of the Mayors wants something everyone has to drop what their doing and rush to that project. The city employees are so under paid most must work a PT job and the only reason most are staying is it the poor economy with the lack of jobs that keep them there. But, look how many people apply for 1 position with it's low pay when it's advertised and that tells you how bad things are in the private sector. I appreciate having my city job and wish I could have a COLA, but with poor leadership and personal agendas tax payers money is usally spent on projects that aren't needed rather then invested in it's employees.

720, you are a void surrounded by a sphincter muscle. Maybe you are just a lazy jealous leech. Most of us are not corrupt, though some undoubtedly are. Most of us are not theives either and have taken nothing more than the loads of shit that people like you so freely pass around. We are no better than you and deserve no more than you, but we also are no worse than you and deserve no less than you. Let's assume this budget passes. By next July 1 (2012) it will have been 4 years since the last time any of us civilians got a raise of any kind for any reason. I don't like it, but I'd rather make do without a raise than have to make do without my job. This year starting July 1 will also be the third straight year of having to take unpaid days off (a.k.a. furlough days), which do amount to a pay cut in effect. Again, I'm not crazy about it but it's a much better alternative than unemployment. Don't any of you out there dare tell me you wouldn't piss and moan about it if the furlough days and lack of raises were imposed on you in your job for the length of time they have been for (civilian) county employees. Having said all that, it is my firm belief that if $100,000 of payroll savings were needed, you would see five $20,000 people let go before you would see one $100,000 person let go. It should be the other way around, but I know how that would work.
