ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 17, 2011) – Governor Martin O’Malley will join the Maryland Port Administration, Ports America Chesapeake, and CSX for a seminar on new container business opportunities at the Port of Baltimore following completed construction of a 50-foot container berth in 2012. Once the berth is completed, the Port of Baltimore will be only the second East Coast port able to handle supersized container ships that will bring more cargo and will increase jobs at the Port.
Last year, Governor O’Malley broke ground on a project to construct a new 50-foot berth to accommodate the larger containers expected to begin passing through the Panama Canal in 2014, a $105 million project supporting 5,700 jobs. The project has gained national attention for its public-private partnership with ports America Chesapeake, which entered into a 50-year agreement with the Maryland Port Administration for operations of the Port.

mr omalley should be really proud of himself partnering with an Arab company to run our port of Baltimore. certainly speaks well for our national security. oh well, what do i know? just a dumb old eastern shoreman spouting off.

yes...you are just a dumb old eastern shoreman...i'm no fan of owemalley but this is actual a wise project...these larger ships are the future...and if you are so worried about an arab company than you should stop buying chinese as well..which will be quite tough
I'm no fan of omalley, but this is one helluvagood move. Like 714 stated, ultra large cargo ships are the future. Better to be ahead of the curve then behind it.
im not knocking the large cargo ships they are reality. its letting an arab company have control of the port that i object to. surely there must be an american company that could do. it just as well. thanks sjd

I think this is a great opportunity for Baltimore and was a wise decision by the elected officials. Baltimore is struggling for available funds and the 100+ million dollar project would not have been possible without private business assistance. As a longshoreman working at the port of Baltimore I am happy that Ports America and the state are investing money in the future of the ports here. As an additional note, I researched everything that I could about the company as I was also concerned but Ports America is an American owned company and the owners are Highstar Capital. I also know that if it was not for many of the contributions made from Ports America Baltimore would not have been able to hold the fireworks the past couple of years for new years or the 4th of July. Although I am union and have my disagreements with the company from time to time, I am happy that they were selected by the state as the stevedore.
