On Monday, May 16, 2011, at approximately 3 p.m., Ocean City Police responded to 97th Street and Coastal Highway for a collision involving a pedestrian. The pedestrian, an 89-year-old Ocean City woman, was attempting to cross Coastal Highway from west to east, when she was struck by a southbound vehicle.

Ocean City Police are continuing to investigate the collision, however, charges against the driver are not pending at this time.

The Ocean City Police Department is reminding citizens to use marked crosswalks when crossing streets in Ocean City. Pedestrians should not take unnecessary risks crossing busy streets against traffic lights. In addition, pedestrians are encouraged to make eye contact with drivers and continue to watch for traffic the entire time you are in the crosswalk. Motorists should also be extremely vigilant

I witnessed this accident as I was riding my bicycle northbound.

The Lady was actually struck by the passenger side, side view mirror.

I pray that she recovers.

I want to point out a danger that I have experienced over the course of driving for 40 years.

You are watching cars pass looking for your opportunity to enter the road. You see a car that you know you must wait to pass. You then turn your attention to the next cars coming. You take your eyes off the first car looking at the next car and you are no longer looking at that first car. I have learned to be patient and wait. To me it looked like that happened here. She started crossing before the first car had past her, she hesitated allowing that first car (van) to pass, then she briskly quickened her pace, but to quick, she got so close to the passing van that the side view mirror clipped her. The side view mirror was shattered. It was very traumatic.

Again pray for her recovery, and for the driver who was obviously shaken and distraught by the accident.
