Harford BOE Approves Promotions AND Demotions

Following a lengthy closed meeting Thursday evening, the Harford County Board of Education approved a number of personnel changes sought by Superintendent Robert Tomback.

Included in those changes are new principals for Fallston, Aberdeen and Joppatowne high schools and the promotion of the current principal at Fallston.

Wednesday’s actions also finalized the demotions of the current Aberdeen and Joppatowne principals, Thomas Szerensits and Macon Tucker Jr., while also enabling Tomback to bring in someone from Baltimore County to head Fallston, one of the highest profile jobs in the 39,000-student Harford school system.

The closed session at the school system headquarters in Bel Air lasted nearly two hours, after which the board convened in a public session at 10 p.m. and acted on Tomback’s list of promotions.

A majority of the seven-member board had refused to vote on those promotions at the previous board meeting Monday, as some members said they wanted more time to consider the list.

Sources close to the board said Tomback’s plan to bring in an outsider for the Fallston job was a major point of contention and, when he refused to back off, it set the stage for an extraordinary confrontation with four of the seven board members that carried into Monday’s meeting and throughout the week.

It seems that short of molesting a student, poor performing BOE staff are merely shuffled around in Wicomico County.  It’s good to see that Harford County has shown that the right thing can be done (or at least the partly right thing).  I wonder what Fredericksen’s next argument will be. – Ed.

"Keesling, who said she served on a committee with the PTA years ago during the search for a new superintendent, said one of that panel’s recommendations was for the school system leadership to include the community in decision-making, especially in regards to major principal changes."

The key words in this statement are..."include the community"

Ok, so I was born and raised in Har Co, and I do a lot of comparing boes because of that.

The one thing I see that we lack down in Wicomico county is parental involvement. You bet your sweet bum Tomback had parents calling and emailing him about the direction they felt that the schools should be heading in.

Go Harford County!

No parents on Race to the Top committees. No parents on interview committees for administrators. No parent questions answered if the Board wants to hide the information. Wicomico Board ignores parents whenever possible unless the parents are of a certain demographic.

Why do you think parents should sit on principal interview committees? Do they ever sit in on interviews at other businesses like the hospital, Perdue, etc.

We can't even get parents to join PTA and participate on school committees or school level parent advisory committees.

Get a grip!

Joe:

Give Frederickson some credit for making a change at Prince St. this year. Some will say it was a medical reason that the principal was let go but it was because he was not effective.

If it was medical, like some want to say, then why is he being offered a teaching position this year instead of a demotion to VP or another school.

I agree, there are some administrators that need to go, esp. VP (Pinehurst for one). Unfortunately, there are not many good candidates out there that will do the job for what they get paid.

1257 - its the stupid cover up crap that really bothers me..medical really? Why can't they just say it? I think Dr F would gain a little more respect from the community if he would just come clean about issues on why principles and vps are moved. At least then parents can make an informed decision about where their child should go.
There are quite of few administrators at schools that need to go....
that being said...
Do you want your old principle back?

Before anyone asks, yes I have 3 kids in public schools in the county. I have witnessed stuff that make the policy's set at schools look like a freaking joke. I would probably have a better chance of a response from Tomback than our own leaders here in this county.
