A BIG FAT NO! our country was founded on religion....they are public servants.

The Salisbury City Council does not necessarly need to begin with the Lord's Prayer. Given the many religions of those who attend Council meeting's it may be appropriate to discontinue the practice.

However it is my opinion the Pledge of Allegiance should be recited at ever public meeting of government officials.Regardless of religious believings we are all Americans.

Those who refuse to recite the Pledge silently announce their lack of patriotism to this great Nation.

NO! I will personaly do evrything I can to see these two "public servants" never win another election if they don't drop the proposal.

We need all the help we can get and starting the meeting with The Lord,s Prayer is a good way to begin.

Anonymous said...

NO BUT I WOULD SUPPORT THE REMOVAL OF SHIELDS AND MITCHELL

Anonymous said...

I support the removal but would insist that the Pledge of Allegiance be recited prior to every meeting.

With the condition our Nation, State, County and City are in, we would think we want all the prayers we could get.

Who knows, the Lord may even answer.

our country was not founded on "religion". it was founded by people who wanted religious freedom to worship freely. it was founded by people who were of judeo, christian leanings. many of them were christian but there were those who did not declare their religious leanings but were godly in their beliefs.
we have freedom of religion; not freedom from religion.
for hundreds of years we have called on Almighty God before school begins; before public meetings; organizational meetings like rotary, boy scouts etc.
oh, and when we have disasters our leaders (most) call for prayer.
why these 2 would want to discontinue this practice i don't understand but maybe should keep an eye on them for future. maybe they feel they are above God or smarter than God and don't need His help. just a thought.

No. I am tired of all the butt kissing political correctness that goes on today. Washington prayed at Valley Forge and Lincoln mentions God in many of his speeches and letters. I guess that "Laura Come-Lately" is smarter than these guys?

Yes, a moment of silence is appropriate for those who wish to pray for guidance. The Lord's Prayer can be prayed silently by Christians, while members/citizens attending who practice other faiths can silently pray according to their religion. Or they can not pray at all if they so choose, but can remain silent in respect of those who are. There is no need to push Christian prayer on everyone, and it's probably illegal to do so anyhow. And I am a Christian republican. Tolerance doesn't only come from democrats.

No. When will this pinky agenda stop? Sick of the politically correct. Sick of the I'm offended agenda. Sick of all of this crap! Shields and Mitchell need to go run a council meeting in Lybia.

Anonymous said...

No way!

Anonymous said...

@6.28 I agree with you remove them not the Lord's Prayer! Obviously removing Religion from everything is not working...Look what is happening around us!

Anonymous said...

yes, our country was founded on separation of church and state.

Anonymous said...

No. The Lord's Prayer doesn't hurt anyone.

Anonymous said...

Laura you ask me to tell you if I thought your were doing wrong well I feel you are. You ask.
I agree with 6:28

Anonymous said...

No i do not support removing the Lord's Prayer from meetings that is what is wrong with society now.

Anonymous said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes, i don't pay them to pray

Anonymous said...

6:28 I agree with you. If Mitchell thinks its a good idea to go along with clueless Shanie, then the voters have made a BIG mistake and she'll be on her way to the end of her stay on the council. Mitchell......You need to not go along with or try to stir more cause there is enough to say grace over at those meetings.

Anonymous said...

Tell Lora and Shanie to go to UMES and worship ALLAH,
and leave us Christians alone darnet!!

toddsmith said...

Yes. Please. No more lords prayer. It may be first thing they have gotten right.

Anonymous said...

Someone, please help me with this one. Seriously, would evening prayers to Allah, led by a Muslim cleric be as welcome? As most cults, oh, sorry, I meant religions follow a similiar code, why not rotate between the big three of the top 40?

Anonymous said...

8:08 sorry our republic was not founded on seperation of church and state.
our government can't declare how we are to worship. they can't declare a church for our country the way england does.
you are drinking the kool-aid of the "lame stream media". please read our founding docs for yourself....

Remove it

Anonymous said...

If you "people" dont want to hear the Lords Prayer dont attend the meetings...you probally dont anyway.

Anonymous said...

What have we elected? Another ding bat? Laura you are better than this.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Meetings are for business purposes. If you want to pray go to church.

Anonymous said...

Remove those two "idiots" from the council............Who do they think brings them through each night to see a new day? Please keep prayer in the council meetings. Since Lora presented to be a goody goody before election, now look at what she is saying, no prayer before the meetings. She can kiss the next election goodby now!!! and also Shanie should say goodby voters..............

Anonymous said...

NO, if they don't want to say just walk in late. better yet let the two of them have their own meeting in the hallway.

Anonymous said...

NO WAY ! - What is wrong with these people! I feel like I've become an alien in my own beloved America.

Anonymous said...

No. One day these two will call upon the name of the Lord, my Bible tells me so.

"The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian Religion." 1797 the treaty of Tripoli, signed by President Washington, and approved by the Senate of the United States.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not!! Enough is enough; we need to leave our original traditions in place until all "recent" problems are resolved satisfactorily... then when we have nothing else to worry about, then we can maybe discuss matters of this nature. Tell them to deal with the issues at hand!

Anonymous said...

I absolutely support removing prayer from City Council meetings. All those saying that it's the lack of a forced prayer that's causing the issues in our country are way off base. Not having a prayer at the beginning of a meeting, school day, etc. does not mean that suddenly your God will punish you. I highly doubt your God is that vindictive. The previous commenters must be such nice people to immediately resort to name-calling when someone does something they don't agree with. What does that get you in life except heartache?

Anyway, I'm not aware of any business that prays before punching in time-cards and I'm not aware of any court system that has a prayer before hearing a trial. Save your prayer for your own time.

No, how about if we propose to remove Shanie and Lora from the meetings if they are offended!

Simply NO

Anonymous said...

NO. The council needs all the prayers and help it can get!

Anonymous said...

In no Way, Laura will not get this Husband and Wife's vote regardless of the outcome.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

It is a meeting, not a religious service. I understand the pledge but that? What if muslim attended, you going to let him get naked and do his ritual? 200 years ago, americans did things that people today cant do and it was (founded) then but now

BIG FAT NO!

Anonymous said...

YES

Anonymous said...

This smacks of one unholy alliance. Throw the bums out!

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not!!

Anonymous said...

Noooooooo! They need to have the Lords prayer to help them stay grounded!!

What a Start! They need to GO!

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not, this is the new Louise Smith, Shanie Shields admiration Society. That is why I never voted for neither of them, they don't have a wit of sense of doing the right thing, what were you all thinking when voting for Lora Mitchell--the hand writing was on the wall!

Anonymous said...

Remove it. You all realize the council president is Jewish, right?

Anonymous said...

NO I do not support that. God is the only thing that is going to help this city, it's too far gone. And for the person that wanted the pledge of allegiance recited instead of prayer, are you going to take out the phrase "one nation under God?"

These ladys must be hypocrits to not want the " Lords Prayer " Just shows how low they really are, Grow up you 2 and face reality. These tow must be equal to the deaf leading the blind, however they are smarter than these two wannabe something.

Drew said...

Praying at a government meeting is totally inappropriate. Do the business of government and do your praying in church.

Anonymous said...

Remove the prayer.
Hold God in your hearts.

Anonymous said...

Frankly, I wish the rest of the council will step up and support this change even if it is unpopular and not let the others hang out to dry. The council president is Jewish, Salisbury citizens come from all walks of life, and you should change this before we go through the unnecessary expense of a lawsuit. A moment of silence is standard, then do the Pledge of Allegience if you must.

Anonymous said...

I think that the silence at the beginning of the council meeting last night said that there was agreement by all council members.

Anonymous said...

Amazing to me that so many "Constitution-defending" conservatives froth at the mouths with anger at the idea of removing a religious ceremony from a government meeting. Since the only part of the Bill of Rights you guys know is the 2nd Amendment, I'd recommend a little refresher course on the 1st.

Anonymous said...

10:59, I think the silence at the beginning of last night's meeting meant there was agreement by everyone in the room!

I have to give it to Terry Cohen. She is Jewish and cannot lead everyone in a Christian prayer. From her reaction, I'm guessing that she thought everyone would do the Lord's Prayer upon rising. It's been done so long. She was very classy and invited everyone who wished to say the Lord's Prayer to do so.

At first I was very (VERY!) upset when I heard taking the Lord's Prayer out was proposed. It is said in my home every day! But after watching last night, I'm not upset. Mrs. Cohen was very sensitive to the Christians in the room. Jesus was a Jew and I thought and prayed about it. Respect must be for all people as he taught us. If not, then saying the Lord's Prayer might just be hypocritical. I'm not upset any more. Watching last night made me think and I love all people, whatever their color or race or religion, just as Jesus would want me to do.bu

Keep the prayer. Religion aside - It's a City tradition. There is no law against saying the Lord's Prayer (or any prayer for that matter) before a City level meeting. How many people could the Lord's Prayer possibly offend anyway?
It's a Christian staple, was prayed by a Jewish carpenter & is found in the Muslim Injil.

Anonymous said...

I would rather hear the Lord's prayer than see the devil's work. It's not about christian and non christain. It's about giving respect to where ALL things come.
