A Letter To The Editor

Joe,

Sunday 3-6-2011 was the usual big supper followed by watching 60 minutes as we have done for years. This past Sunday was somewhat different and quite heart wrenching at times. For those who didn’t view this weeks episode the show told a true story of hard times in America of families loosing their homes to foreclosure and children facing poverty rate that will soon hit 25%. Scott Pelley interviewed children whose parents have lost jobs causing their homes to fall into foreclosure who now struggle to keep a roof over their head living week to week in hotels. One child said they lived in the family van in the Wal-Mart parking lot where the children used Wal-Marts bathroom to wash and brush their teeth. After watching the story I have come to terms our country is in horrible shape worse than ever. Hearing these children talk of going to bed hungry because their wasn’t any food waiting till the following day to eat on the school lunch program breaks my heart. After watching the program I became painfully angry seeing so much federal funding being wasted on useless programs while good American people are loosing their homes and starving. As my mind turned in frustration I couldn’t help but think of waste right here in Salisbury. Right away I remember last Monday night Salisbury city council approving the purchase of a million dollar fire boat that I frankly don’t think is necessary. How many children might enjoy a hot meal if that million dollars were better utilized. I know its political but this really caught my attention.

I also watched 60 minutes and was very upset about how our own LEGAL citizens can't receive any help in this country. I don't understand how we can send money to others countries and we need help right here in America. Illegal immigrants get more help than hard working, tax paying citizens. This is an embarrasment.

Amen!!! I agree whole heartedly and feel we should start to help out our own country instead of others for a while...I mean how can we help others when at our back door we as a nation is suffering so much??? if your coming to america then you should pay taxes and not get a free ride..and those of us americans that are working the system instead of working and just sitting around popping out babies should be cut off too and made to work...i am tired..tired of all the free loading and tired of seeing our hard earned money go to waste!!

Just make sure that the bankers and wall street execs keep getting bailouts and multi-million dollar salaries and multi-million dollar bonuses. Keep allowing banks to foreclose on homes and gouge credit card users. We no longer practice capitalism...more like robber baron gangsterism. Make sure that Senators and Representtatives get to keep their separate and lucrative pensions and health care plans and annual pay raises. Make sure the IRS has enough new agents to make sure middle class America doesn't get away with any unpaid taxes. Make sure that illegal immigrants get free medical care and schooling and housing. Just keep putting the hammer down on the rest of us. Change is coming.

It only takes one person to make this change be that person.

I rarely watch 60 Minutes, anymore, but I did watch the story you're referring to.The sad thing is, it's not going to get better any time soon.

At least the men who built the fire boat have jobs and can feed their children.
