Pilfering From Landfill To Be A Crime

As far as County Councilman John Grasso is concerned, your old newspapers, batteries and soda cans just got a little bit safer.

Stealing them is about to become a crime.

The County Council last night endorsed the freshman lawmaker's first bill, which declares recyclable materials county property as soon as they are on county land.

Under the legislation, scooping up wires, tires, glass or anything else that generates revenue for Anne Arundel County will be illegal; police will be allowed to search for and seize the stolen rubbish. The thief could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

So if they did that here, the people who go around fishing all the stuff out of the recycle dumpsters would have to stop.
That would be a good thing-- if that is a revenue source.

The county councils should take that up, and they should take a good look at how the recycling program is being handled, to make sure it is as profitable as it can be.

With inmate labor, it should be a good, profitable business.
