STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ON THE PASSING OF SARGENT SHRIVER

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 18, 2011) – Governor Martin O’Malley issued this statement today on the passing of Sargent Shriver, the founding director of the Peace Corps and a lifelong public servant:

“As a Maryland native, Sargent Shriver embodied the ideals we share as One Maryland – our belief in the dignity of every individual and in our own responsibility to advance the greater good.  Those programs that will serve as the legacy to man dedicated to public service – the Peace Corps, Head Start, Jobs Corps, Vista, and others – are more important to our nation now than ever.  Sargent Shriver’s overwhelming optimism and energy brightened our nation in its darkest times and served to defend the very ideals our country was built upon.

“I join all Marylanders in mourning the loss of one of our nation’s greatest servants, and in celebration of a life dedicated to others.”
