Lesbian Cadet Quits West Point, Cites 'Don't Ask' Policy

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — A lesbian cadet asked Monday to resign from the U.S. Military Academy because she no longer can lie about her sexuality and was troubled by the anti-gay attitudes of some around her.

Cadet Katherine Miller of Findlay, Ohio, also said she wants to fight for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law, a subject she was studying and writing about as a sociology major at West Point.

"I intend for my resignation to offer a concrete example of the consequences of a failed law and social policy," she wrote in her resignation letter, referring to the law against gays serving openly in the military.

Cadet Miller wrote proudly of her accomplishments as a student, athlete and soldier and said that she had not been pressured by anyone to resign. But she wrote of being "coerced into ignoring derogatory comments towards homosexuals for fear of being alienated for my viewpoint" and of enduring "sexual harassment for fear of being accused as a lesbian."
(Editor's note: Cadet Miller is ranked 9th in her class of over 1100 West Point cadets. She has been accepted at Yale University for the upcoming semester.)

In the letter, she said she fabricated a heterosexual dating history to share with any fellow cadets who asked.

"In short, I have lied to my classmates and compromised my integrity and identity by adhering to existing military policy," she said.

that is a real shame that this young lady can't live her life in the open and also serve her country. What a waste.

She can. She just has to not talk about it. Same as I wasn't allowed to go around talking about my conservatism (which no one knew about unless I made it a point to say it out loud), my Catholicism, etc. While active duty, you shut up and do your job. If you can't do that, then get out.

Cadet Miller is just trying to make a point, and has thrown away her military career because of it.

She,s Handsome.

She needs to get her mental state together before serving in our Military .

I heard she left lickity split hehehe .

By lying to her classmates (and also fabricating a hetrosexual relationship) she broke the Honor Code that is one of the basics of West Point. This alone should cause her to leave. Let her push her gay agenda at Yale--they'll probably make her class president there!

What do gays and liberals know about honor ?

3:02,

Obviously, more than you do. Hate to tell you this, but many gays and liberals died for your freedoms.

A pole smoker and carpet licker of the bi/homo sexual persuasion is an illness. A mental illness and that is reason enough for someone not to protect our country.

Thats the deal in the U.S. military. She knew it when she signed up, but DID IT ANYWAY. WHAT did she think was going to happen, sooner or later? Don't join an organization when you are not able (or willing) to adhere to it's policies and regulations. Good riddance. Good luck pushing your agenda at wherever you land, be it Yale or Harvard or whatever. And I don't feel sorry for you, babe. I might, however, if you were better looking...

Homosexuality is an illness that can be cured . We need the best of the best in the military maybe when she gets her head together she can try again . She should get married and have a couple kids like it was intended .

She apparently applied to and was accepted at Yale before deciding gaining the courage to announce her disagreement with our military's well-known, longstanding policy. If she were completely honest and wanted to bravely stand up for her beliefs, she would have done so before being accepted to Yale! Instead, she used West Point for their free, excellent educational and reputation, while deceiving them of her true beliefs/ identity. Only after making sure that she would be free of any personal risk/sacrifice/debt, she was able to turn around and denounce West Point and their policies. How admirable and unselfish.
