Sugar Gliders

Joe,

There are some guys selling sugar gliders in the mall, calling them "sugar babies" or some such.

The animals are apparently well-cared for and cuter than a box of puppies. But here are some words of warning for those who might think they want one for their kids or for themselves, thinking that they're just as easy to take care of as a dog or cat:

I don't want to see these guys' business be hurt, but I also don't want to see sugar gliders in the animal shelter or, worse yet, know that some were "set free" when the weather was good.

Anyone who sells pets for a profit should be put out of business. There are way too many homeless pets in shelters across the country. These shelters have to euthanize animals everyday, because of greedy people who make their living selling dogs, cats and other pets from puppy mills and backyard breeders. The owners of pet stores don't care about animals just their bottom line.

I have 2 sugar bears and they are absolutely a great addition to our family. They bond with not only the people but also pets. For someone thinking of making the purchase, research first. They are a committment. The life span is 12 to 15 years and they require a great deal of attention especially in the first few months when they are trying to bond. It's a very frustrating time and unless you are totally committed to these little critters, you'll give up. They take a lot of work and even more patience to bond. They don't come home as cut and friendly as the ones at the mall but depending on the company you purchase from, you will get a great deal of support on how to make the transition an easy one. If you are willing to put in the time, sugergliders are amazing and will keep you in laughter for hours as they play and glide around.

i'm glad you posted this joe. i was debating on whether or not to write you about these folks in the mall (FYI - they are no longer there. 11/29 was their last day).

i work in the mall and myself & another associate went down to see the little critters. Cute doesn't even begin to describe them! they were absolutely precious.

While i'm not interested in purchasing a glider (or "bear" as they were calling them), even if i were people like this would be the LAST place i would get them. i think that buying from pet stores or places such as what was set up in the mall just encourages the "need" for breeding mills. poor little babies.

i told my co-worker that we could probably find some at the humane society after the first of the year - discarded exotic christmas presents.
