Wicomico School System Celebrates 2010 Community Foundation Education Grant Awards For Schools, Programs

The Wicomico County Public School System is delighted that a number of schools and programs have received 2010 Education Grant Awards from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore Inc.

Salisbury Middle School ($1,950)
Project: Community Garden - This program, modeled after the First Lady's "Let's Move" Initiative, will create a community garden that will provide vast opportunities for student learning, peer to peer education and networking (integrating special needs and general education students) as well as unique partnerships with local businesses and community groups in the creation of the garden.
Amount Requested: $3,000.00
Recommendation: Partially fund in the amount of $1,950.

Wicomico County Board of Education ($2,700)
Project: African American Summit V - A program targeting approximately 40 African-American males from the four Wicomico County high schools and focused on character education, peer encouragment, service learning and academic achievement/behavior incentives.

Wicomico County Board of Education ($700)
Project: Link for Literature - This program is coordinated through the Instructional Resource Center and partners with elementary schools in Wicomico County to provide incentive and support materials for the implementation of reading programs.

Wicomico High School ($2,000)
Project: DRAMA (Developing Respect, Acceptance, Maturity and Admiration) for Girls - This program will target girls in 9th-12th grade that have demonstrated special needs (behavior referral, learning needs, expectant mothers, etc) for enrichment and creative experiences to develop a greater appreciation in their "potential" for success.

Beaver Run Elementary School (1,200)
Project: CrossFit Kids - This program is a strength and conditioning program to maximize the limited time allocated to physical education and deliver a program that is broad, general and inclusive to meet the needs of a wide range of students.

Northwestern Elementary School ($2,500)
Project: A Blast of Science - A program to bring the Maryland Science Center's traveling programs to students in grades K-5. Four programs will be offered throughout the year to complement classroom science programs.

Westside Intermediate School ($2,500)
Project: Arts Integration Grades 2-4 - This program would focus on arts integration using the fine arts and theatre as the basis for integration in all classes. The school will partner with two theatres to provide an artists in residency experience with a final performance for parents and community members.

Willards Elementary School ($2,380)
Project: Artist in Residence: Screen Painting with John Iampieri - Program for first grade students focusing on screen painting, a unique tradition considered to be an indigenous form of folk art in the Baltimore area.

Fruitland Intermediate School ($3,000)
Project: Arts Integration 3rd Grade - This project will focus on arts integration for all 3rd grade students, culminating in an "Arts Night" where students will display their work.

Prince Street Elementary ($651)
Project: Project SPEAK - This project focuses on an annual oratorical competition bringing students from Prince Street, Glen Avenue and East Salisbury together. In each school, teachers work with students to write, rehears, memorize and deliver original, independent speeches to promote creativity and self-confidence.

Glen Avenue Elementary School ($1,463)
Glen Avenue Magazine Program - To provide 5th grade students with the opportunity to produce their own school magazine to learn how to work together, meet deadlines and make decisions as part of a team. The goal is to produce three issues throughout the school year.

African Summit V would not be allowed for one second if it was Caucasian Summit V. Any amount of money spent on kids other than minority kids is racist or elitist. Tens of millions on at risk or minority kids is just fine, though.
