Area's Part-Time Job Losses Among The Nation's Worst

WASHINGTON -- While many in the Washington region have emerged fairly unscathed from the economic recession, one economic group has taken a particularly hard hit: part-time workers.

Median pay for part-time workers met double-digit losses in almost every local jurisdiction, falling 28 percent in Fairfax County in 2007 and 2008, and dropping one third for those in Howard County, according to a Washington Post analysis of the 2009 American Community Survey.
 
The Maryland and Virginia suburbs used to boast the highest part-time pay for women. Now, after falling $2,700 over two years to $13,500 -- the steepest drop in the country -- it's fourth. Pay for men decreased $4,300, falling from from second-highest nationally to seventh place with $18,400 median pay.
