It's come to our attention that Governor O'Malley is courting a Swedish company (Swebo) to come to Maryland to burn manure to create electric energy. There's a company called Cambridge International, Inc., that has been working on the same problem for a while and has a prototype ready that will generate electric energy from chicken manure. Cambridge International (300 employees and a 100 year old company) and Allen Foods, another large chicken growing concern on the Shore, were in the process of getting permits necessary to build the plant that would burn the manure that would generate the electricity. They were not able to get the permits, and the whole effort is in limbo.
The idea of burning manure to create electricity is not a new one http://www.bio-energysolutions.com/product_pdfs/prod_blad_pb2.pdf . Cambridge International has been working on their process for years, and was ready to put its prototype to full test, but was denied building permits. They didn't ask for economic assistance from the state, as they had already completely funded it themselves. Swebo's half million dollar grant from the state “will create 3 jobs, with 15 to 20 more later”, according to the August 2009 press release http://www.swebo.com/fileadmin/pressklipp/pressreleaser_eng/pressrelease_090820_en.pdf . Cambridge International's plan would also create jobs, most likely more than 23, and in an area that desperately needs them.
So, why are we importing the technology when it already exists here?

A quick check of Cambridge Internationals' web site shows that they are in the business of wire and metal belts. No where on their site do the mention anything about a plan "in place" as it is stated here for burmning of chicken manure for producining electricity. If this technology is "in place" here please show some documentation to support you claim.
Because Cambridge International and Allen Foods were able to figure this out themselves, and O'Malley cannot take credit for bringing new companies to Maryland. I'd also venture to guess that they did not grease the wheels of the political machine to get rid of the pesky permit problems.
It truly is this simple. O'Malley does not care about the consituency of the eastern shore.
A company called Fibre Shore has been trying to do this since early 2000's. I don't know if they still are interested or even around , but the sticking point may have been the rate they would receive from the electric generated. May not have been competetive. Also, the plan was to burn other biomass along with the chicken manure.

Has anyone bothered to look into the health risks related to burning chicken crap? Those health hazards are high when a machine isn't working at the exact temp or malfunctions. It is dangerous to work in a dang chicken coop much less further spread the risks by releasing the pollutants in the air we all have to share! Stupid stupid move for anyone to "pursue" this source of electric.
Because the Western Shore people consider all Eastern Sore people backwards. Well I hate to tell them as well as all the bashers on this blog is that you need to get your head out of your a$$ and listen to these so called rednecks as they have more common sense than city folk.

I remember my grandmother saying when she traveled to china, and I believe this is accurate, that in some places of asia and china, they have the livestock in the 'basement' area of a home. The people that live / work there then pipe this gas up to the upper areas of the building and use the gas for lighting, heating, etc. This is hundreds of years old practice in asia.
