Md. Lawmakers Not Feeling So Southern Anymore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland's official song may include a line about "Northern scum" left over from the Civil War era, but the state isn't feeling so Southern anymore.

Though Marylanders live just south of the Mason-Dixon Line, their attitudes and even their accents straddle that border. These days, leaders feel they've got more in common with states to the north.

In one sign of the shift, lawmakers successfully petitioned to move from the Southern Region of the Council of State Governments to the Eastern Region, where they'll be able to trade ideas with fellow officials from Pennsylvania, New York, and other states they consider more like-minded.

Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties (the DEEP shore) are definitely Southern. The accents, politics, and way of life are reminiscent of the tidewater of VA. I've always thought the "This is where the south begins" sign in New Church, VA should start in Cambridge. I could even agree with Talbot, Caroline and Queen Anne's being Southern, but that's pushing it with new transplants.

However, Cecil, Montgomery, Howard, Baltimore, and the rest are definitely Yankee land (resembling PA more than VA).

The Western counties are more Appalachian then Southern.

But I don't want to be a Yankee!!!

I was born and raised on the Eastern Shore- but I think I'm more of a Yankee by far. It's about personality and life style choices though- I have zero interest in a slow pace of life, knowing everyone in town, and taking forever to get served because the person waiting on me feels it is important to chat me up instead of just doing their job and moving on to the next customer. And I like anonymity.

Not saying these other things aren't good- and I don't mind them in small doses- but everyday life? No way!
